The context behind your post is Trump's executive order that mandated that all new federal buildings in DC had to be classically styled which made the (student) architects in /r/architecture seethe a lot. Here's some more seething:

Honestly if everyone says that what you're doing is shit perhaps what you have done is shit.

As for the question the answer is simple, lying about yourself to seem more appealing happens constantly. It's why people lie about their weight, lie about their hobbies so on and so forth.

There's also plenty of women who'll scream like a banshee if you don't agree with their political stance and plenty of men who don't really give a shit.

Women had serious political opinions and pushed them onto potential spouses before the 19th amendment, the difference there is they didn't have as much sway in actual voting. My personal take is the 'importance' of partner agreeing has just been exacerbated by your usual suspects.
