I have read, heard, seen that students of color are disproportionately written up, disciplined and suspended from school. I know student mental health issues are at an all time high. I know the data. My question is, what do I do when it’s the students of color that are the ones causing 90% of the fights, disruptions, defiance, etc. I have white kids do the same thing, but not at the same rate. I am conscious of the data, and I don’t write kids up unless the behavior warrants it.
We have the same expectations for all students. We have the same supports for all students. I have the same compassion and empathy for all students.
How do I make a difference to change the data?
