There's a surprising amount of people out there who wear "being a neet" as a badge of honor.

The antiwork ideal is a pretty widespread one and it's true a lot of people opt for NEETness to "fight the power." The only power they're fighting is arrested development. It'll die out quickly given that they don't participate in society. Oh, and the fact that there's never been a point in human history where work of some form wasn't necessary.

It's hard to blame them given the state of the economy.

The only jobs available pay like shit, rent is through the roof, so if you move out you're going to spend nearly your entire salary with nothing left over to eat out or go on dates or whatever. What's the point? Might as well stay in mom and dad's basement playing Fortnite and not have to work in some McDonald Franchisee's little fiefdom.

When I first moved out of my parents' house 20 years ago, a person working minimum wage could comfortably afford a place to live here in Canada. It's not like that anymore. Hard to blame people for just saying fuck the whole thing.

I find that there's something fundamentally missing from these types the same way psychopaths lack emotional awareness, or in the way that autists lack social awareness. It isn't quite the same as a lack of drive or motivation. It isn't depression, either, but it's like whatever they're experiencing takes a little bit from all of these disorders. Self serving, emotionally and socially disengaged, often with a flat affect, and no desires one way or another. While most people appear to turn to growth, productivity, and additive life developments, NEETs are subtractive. They don't want anything, but they know what they don't want.

To me it's the ultimate form of the puer aeternus; there is no responsibility to the outside world and even more alarmingly, no responsibility to the self. Somehow, some way, they have a childlike imagining of how things will be for them, that they will be taken care of and not have to worry about development or growth. Their imaginings are delusional and often unshared because even in their childlike mind, they know their reasoning can be defeated. They have single track minds and can't imagine things going a way that they haven't somehow prognosticated.
