Reading this hit hard home for me. I grew up in Portland, Oregon in the late 90s and early 2000s before the shitholification of the city happened in the late 2010s. I never worried about my safety as a kid and played outside totally unsupervised for hours at a time both alone and with my sister. It was never an issue. Never was hassled by bums or threatened. We went off campus in middle school and never had an issue why worry? The neighborhood was safe and non-violent. Nowadays? Security cameras are everywhere, flood lights on houses, the grocery store has armed guards at the entry that check your receipt. Riots, violent homeless addicts, trash strewn about in the street and graffiti everywhere. It's all fucked. The stealing is also out of control it's so bad in some areas people literally put locks on their trash cans because bums will just dig through to take things and throw shit everywhere. I know multiple people who've had their cars stolen right in front of their houses.
