Imo for a lot of them, rhey've convinced themselves that believing what they believe makes them intellectuals, which they feel gives them a free pass to be awful. They view intellectualism as one of the highest virtues you can aspire to. In their eyes, everyone who disagrees with them is stupid and therefore lacking in virtue, so it's fine to be a jackass to them. They can communicate in a snarky, condescending tone because if you don't agree or don't 'get it,' then you deserve to feel bad and belittled. They refuse to engage with opposing views because they've convinced themselves everyone else is stupid, can't have an informed opinion, and therefore doesn't deserve to have their views looked at critically. They always spout the approved party lines because they believe that signals their status as an intellectual and a Good Person.
