Alabamian here. I know it’s a lot easier to just make incest jokes and shit on us, but I hope y’all remember that there are a lot of good people here trying really hard to affect positive change in our communities. Gov. Ivey has surprised me, too, recently. Still, there’s a looooooong way to go before we can rest. Nevertheless, it is always kind of disappointing to see people literally shocked and in disbelief that anything good ever happens in Alabama.
People trying to fix things here need y’all’s help. This is an incredibly hostile environment for progressive politics, there are very, very limited resources available for people in most parts of the state, opportunity for change is low, and then we also have to deal with being the butt of the nation’s jokes. It’s just tired. I wish people would spend their energy supporting and amplifying good Alabamians rather than making fun of the bad ones. But whatever gets upvotes, I guess. Better yet, come visit and see the innumerable wonderful things the state has to offer.
I always try to say this when Alabama comes up on reddit because it’s always the same thing—there is just so. much. “hurr durr cousin fuckers lol roll tide”. It’s lazy as shit and doesn’t even make sense. First cousin marriage is legal in New York, California, Colorado, and sixteen other states.
Anyway, sorry for the novel. We’d love to meet y’all. Come grab a Grapico and some barbecue, check out our beaches and wilderness, see the Civil Rights museums, or just hang out. There’s plenty to do and plenty of real nice folks.
