I think (and I could be wrong - I haven't thought THAT hard about it) that it has to do with the utopian ideologies of leftists.

Capitalists and liberals (in the political philosophy sense) know that capitalism and liberalism are far from perfect - they're just the best options available. So no one's core axioms are threatened by dissent or unhappiness.

But far-left ideologies are going to usher in the literal utopian dream. The Soviet Union was the ideal state. So if you're unhappy or are fomenting dissent, there must be something profoundly wrong with you and you need to be removed like a cancer from the otherwise perfect utopia.
