Disaster Reeesist protester climbs Statue of Liberty to call for abolishment of ICE

A woman wearing a “Rise and Resist” shirt spent the 4th of July climbing the base of the Statue of Liberty, officials said.

The unidentified climber was seen scaling the base of the Liberty Island statue about 3 p.m. this afternoon, following a protest on Liberty Island.

Liberty Island was evacuated as a precaution as U.S. Parks workers tried to bring the climber down. Parks workers also cordoned off the base of the statue with chairs to prevent anyone from getting close, witnesses said.

The woman was seen walking along the base of the statue by Lady Liberty’s sandals, then decided to sit down by the folds of her robe, witnesses said.

First responders climbed to the base of the statue and set up a ladder to talk to the woman and convince her to come down.

Investigators first believed that the climber was part of an anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement protest sponsored by the group Rise and Resist that held on the island earlier Wednesday.

Members of the group said that the daredevil was not part of their protest.

Parks police arrested and cited seven people after the group unfurled an “Abolish ICE” banner at the base of the statue, according to a U.S. Parks Police spokesman.

The protestors also put on black T-shirts that spelled out “Abolish ICE.”

Ken Kidd, 60, of Manhattan, who participated in the Liberty Island protest said that visitors to the landmark applauded when they unfurled the banner.

As for whether the protest was worth it - a non political internet shitforum are talking about it, along with the mainstream news and probably everyone else. This is going beyond the Twitter/Tumblrsphere, random non-fake-newscast on Youtube, chainmail message on Facebook, etc. That is exactly what they intended.

...yeah, because becoming a minor headline for a day has such a massive impact on public opinion. If she'd made a massive impact on the ground instead, now that would keep people talking for at least an extra day!

That is true... but she was probably looking for the mass attention an act like that would bring. Doing stuff like collecting supplies to donate to newcomer families who can't access or are afraid to access government care doesn't bring in the news trucks.

Oh, you're absolutely not wrong. I just think it's a completely ineffectual method of protest, and at the end of the day accomplished nothing except a massive waste of government resources.

At this point, you'd have to be living under a rock to not have heard about children being separated from their parents at the border. This act isn't bringing any sort of "awareness", and certainly isn't going to change any opinions on either side.

I'd like to point out the "eight minutes" video as a 'protest' (dunno if it can be called that) that actually has the potential to sway people's opinions, even if it's through fairly simple emotional manipulation.
