Because he was getting nothing out of it himself, see.
I'm not saying he wasn't getting anything out of it. But if you've listened to him moaning over the last few years, you know this site has never been meaningfully profitable until recently. Why keep sticking his neck out for it if it's not going to be relatively legally easy to run, and isn't making him any cash? Just because he has the skills and the means to keep the site up and running doesn't mean he has to, or should.

lolcow mailing list

that's just one step removed from the usegroups
Like with many things in life, reject modernity and return to tradition. I for one welcome the future where we are back to using Usenet! (Unless you meant actual user groups?)
Or at the very least Gemini/Gopher sites, but honestly that's thinking way far ahead with this I'd rather sip some tea and wait it out.

Besides, he's in the same age range as a decent amount of the userbase he hosts. He's still got a fair bit of his life to go, and by 30, who wouldn't want to try and settle down? I get the feeling that even if s230 wasn't in danger, the site would have still shut down anyway just because Nool wants to move on with his life. And I can't blame him on that.

Was there someone holding a gun to his head and demanding he do this

Yet another community that I found favorable in more ways than one is at risk of going to the wayside. I don't want to go back to 4chan and or whatever dead forum I was lurking and using as a vagrant before I found this place. It's this place alone thats keeping me from completely abandoning any form of worthwhile human interaction. And to see some co-opted retard trying to fuck with this out of spite because he doesn't want to leave that site and go to one of his hiveminded alternatives - shameful.

Back under the rock.

Section 230 exists because Prodigy had moderation and CompuServe didn't .

"CompuServe was found not be at fault as, by its stance as allowing all content to go unmoderated, it was a distributor and thus not liable for libelous content posted by users. However, Stratton Oakmont, Inc. v. Prodigy Services Co. found that as Prodigy had taken an editorial role with regard to customer content, it was a publisher and legally responsible for libel committed by customers".

Basically, null's only option if section 230 gets repealed is to turn kiwifarms into 8chan/4chan and allow any content to get posted.

how can russian torrent sites and stormfront stay online but not a shitposting forum
russian torrent sites have the benefit of introducing someone to something and potentially growing sales (quite a few people who pirate give money to creators in some way) and its not worth it to spend the money to hunt and shut down a Russian site that will just pop up again for a fraction of the cost you spent to chase them down. Stormfront stays online because its easier to track the genetic geniuses who decide to use the site rather than find them when they aren't congregated. Its also because most people know that its wrong. The issue with Kiwi Farms is that it isn't wrong. Gossip and shitposting is just a thing that happens. People don't like it because it brings their skeletons out front and center for everyone else to see.

Another difference is that Null doesn't want to deal with breaking the law. The owners and operators of questionable sites don't have that moral hold up.

All good things must come to an end. I personally prefer Kiwifarms going out on top rather than see it turn into a shadow of its former self like Something Awful.

If it ends (I still doubt it because Silicon Valley is pretty damn powerful) I thank you for your service and wish you well on your next endeavor Null. This site helped me stay sane during lockdowns.

This website has disappeared completely multiple times, and has also been completely ruined multiple times. I have passed the point of worrying, in truth KF has long surpassed its expiry date.

It is a completely different place from when I first visited, none of my friends are still here, and null has largely grown out of it.

But I had fun.
