Relooted - You play a black person who breaks into places and steals stuff.

What happened to it? And why?

I at least understand the pyramids were covered in valuable stone.
they want to remove any evidence of past ideologies.
this is to say that their brand of islam is the only thing that has ever existed, history of a time before them doesn't exist so they must have been here forever

They can’t help themselves, can they?

So, instead of keeping the African stuff in a museum where people will be exposed to it and learn about it, the object of the game is to break into the museums, steal the stuff, and lock it away.
I want to believe somebody who thought or approved this idea is taking the piss.

Sorry devs, but Europe actually did more positives for African culture than Africa did itself

I've seen discourse from the black community before about how museums, such as those in the UK, are complicit in the stealing of African cultural objects and history and how they conflate this to "the white man is stealing our culture." I had thought this was such a small group of POC who thought this logic actually made sense but apparently it's big enough that it eventually spawned a video game based on this entire premise.

What POC need to realize is that Europeans who came to that continent and "stole" precious cultural objects are doing so to help preserve your culture and identity because Africa itself, for centuries, couldn't be bothered to do so by simply erecting its own museums dedicated to itself. Perhaps one can make the argument that it was originally designed to show how land was conquered but we all know we've progressed and evolved beyond that point and that these museums are not bragging about colonialism. The oldest museum in Africa (actually built by a white man, by the way) is in South Africa and was erected in 1825.

Most of these items are actually purchased or traded for legitimately as well, not "looted." It's simply racism from POC to assume that Europeans went to Africa and did not trade or buy what is equivalent to the modern-day term of a souvenir, acquired by a tourist at a country's destination tourist locations.

Most of its other museums were erected in the 21st century and that was largely thanks to foreigners coming to Africa to share their skills and knowledge with architecture and building. I've been to the L’Aventure du Sucre and even this was a building created by the French in the 17th century and repurposed into a museum centuries later, it wasn't truly an African creation.

This video game is clearly revolving around the idea that museums are forbidden from cataloging African history, which is sort of the point of a museum. It does that for everything so there's no victimization to be had here. If we want to be a united race of people then culture needs to be shared worldwide so that people don't have to travel to Africa just to learn about it. African museums, by the way, still possess hundreds of thousands of unique 'artifacts' collectively between each other.

You can't claim ownership and entitlement of everything from a random mask made from clay to hairstyles to iPhones or shoes in a Foot Locker.

Demanding your local museums to return their possessions to Africa isn't going to do anything. What I always find funny is that the POC who complain about this non-issue have been living in a western country for their entire lives as well. Perhaps you are more than welcome to volunteer transmitting these items back to Africa and your citizenship transferred since you are probably from there as well. But one of the in-game characters is named Trevor which is perhaps the whitest name for a black person ever next to Tanner or something which sort of goes to prove that you are benefiting in a country that is not African and may not belong there either, so if one must go then so should everything else, right?

Without Europeans, the 'artifacts' you see residing on display in museums would have vanished or been destroyed years ago. But because it was saved from such a fate, you now have an entire community and continent demanding these museums return the items while assigning terms like "looted" to it. POC who live in these western societies should, if anything, be grateful that these museums have exhibits dedicated to African countries, and if Africa didn't have such a history of greed and corruption then its leaders would also understand that and would be honored to have their ancestry shared across the world.

It was only because of Europeans that museums even became a concept in Africa to begin with, let's be honest, and so I think Africa can give some thanks to Europe and allow them to keep at least some objects to continue educating people about other cultures, including their own POC demographic.

I did some small research on this and I 100% believe this game is just done for performative reasons.

Much like Dustborn the studio seems to be dependent on funding and doesn't really care if the game sells or not as they have already made their money. However it looks as though their funding doesn't come from the government but rather from a private corporation, to be specific Humble according to an article plublished on gameindustry dot biz [A] via a program called the Black Game Developer Fund [A]. Sadly, I couldn't find who are the other recipients for the fund are but I have no reason to think the games they're currently developing are any different.

TL;DR: Stop buying games from Humble, let the devs of a Hat in Time starve. This shouldn't be too hard, I remember hearing Humble wasn't doing too hot these days.

The dev team is also awfully white for a studio that prides itself on being black, but hey what do I know, maybe they're otherkin that identify as a black looter or some shit.

Thinking about it a bit more it's extra funny because what the fuck did africans even have that was worth shit? most of their "artifacts" are ooga booga masks and vaguely obscene crudely hewn fertility statues, hardly the elgin marbles

To be fair, that's always a problem with artifacts made of wood rather than marble, porcelain or bronze. That said, no one wants them. Even black people refuse to buy this crap. Museums keep them in storage mostly to virtue signal.
