remember Dizzy?

Game design, level design, plot, dialogue. So none of the coding or audiovisual work.
Seems you're correct--the Yolkfolk.com page for that game lists a ton of other people who did all that.

So the latest "official" Dizzy game is basically a glorified fangame. Playing it for a few minutes I also notice it begins with a fuckton of story setup, something none of the previous games did. Though I guess it might be more necessary these days since there's no manual (not that the original games had much of a manual either).

............

I also read on TV Tropes that at one point the Olivers were in talks with Hanna-Barbera about making a Dizzy cartoon. Gonna be honest, I'm sad it never happened.

My hope for such a project would be it giving Dizzy more of an identity. If there is one criticism I have its that I'm not big on stuff like "in this game the main character explores the world of a famous book" or things like that. I'd much rather the mythology around characters like the Yolkfolk or the wizard Zaks be fleshed out a bit.

EDIT: By the way, yolkfolk.com keeps breaking on me. You guys wouldn't happen to have anything to do with that, would you?

Fun fact -- Apparently Treasure Island Dizzy's infamous "one life then you have to start the whole game over" design choice was because the Twins realized there was softlock potential due to the Snorkel, but couldn't find a way to fix it. There's a 2023 fan remake now that comes up with a solution--the Snorkel is simply permanently in your inventory once you pick it up.

Ah, so these games are badly made as well. You shouldn't cover up a bug with worse mechanics.

Not that it's the only problem--they aren't terribly difficult games mechanics-wise with puzzles and exploration but the controls and hit detection are awful. These games are a bunch of ... rotten eggs!

Dude. Treasure Island Dizzy was the second game in the series, and all its issues were fixed in subsequent entries. This is a little like saying all the Final Fantasy games are badly made because of Final Fantasy 2 (Famicom).

For "controls," I call skill issue ;). Not sure what you mean about hit detection.

Do they canonically have chicken embryos inside them, or what?
Ooooh, what if they're dinosaur eggs? And that's the reason the evil wizard Zaks is always messing with them, because he wants them to hatch into a dino army?

Final Fantasy has more games to draw from and have produced some of the greatest video games of their generation. Dizzy not so much.

Despite having legs, Dizzy rolls around constantly. More than once have I ruined a game by trying to stand on a dock and our shelled hero decides that he'd just decide to roll off the side to a watery death.

The hit detection comes with Fantasy World Dizzy where the gate will close on Dizzy if he's standing next to it, and similar issues with the rat. But again, this comes with extremely loose controls.

@Xarpho's Return I swear every time there's a game topic there's people who remember a game being harder or more "bad" than it actually was.

But.... which version of Fantasy World Dizzy are you playing? I tried out the ZX Spectrum and the MS-DOS versions. While I had some issues with Dizzy rolling me into a grave they're easy to account for, and I didn't have hitbox issues with the gate at all. (That creature on the next screen tho is a bitch).

What kind of game is that?

....

Was looking into another Oliver Twins game, Super Robin Hood. I'm kind of amazed the computer versions were a sort of Metroid-ish affair. I was only familiar with the NES port, which from what I played was a more standard left-to-right affair. I wish we had gotten a more accurate port.

... Considering Dizzy had an alcohol problem even in his prime, your image checks out.

Incidentally, currently I've beaten the first two Dizzy games but Fantasy World Dizzy has me stumped a bit. I actually have seen some examples of the hitbox issues that @Xarpho's Return was talking about when trying to use items (like giving the apple to the troll at the beginning) so its hard to tell if I've got the wrong idea, or the right idea but not standing in the exact perfect place the game wants.

I also finally purchase Fantastic Dizzy for the Sega Genesis, which I've heard people say is the best Dizzy game. But I've also heard Fantastic Dizzy recycles a lot of puzzles from earlier games so I almost don't know if I want to play it out of order. Also apparently the NES version is a bit different.

Also, on ROM sites I can find Dizzy games for MS-DOS but I never see them show up on ebay, making me wonder if these are real games sold in stores or if they're fan-made (one of them definitely is).
