I actually view Microsoft more positively than any other AAA publisher, mostly because of these titles.

Honestly I think Obsidian is garbage (PoE) unless they get a kick in the pants from the Publisher (FO:NV, SP:Stick of Truth)

In 2006 Peter Molyneux sold Lionhead studios to Microsoft
In 2012 Peter Molyneux left Lionhead studios
In 2012 Peter Molyneux founded mobile games company 22Cans

In 1990 Ray Muzyka, Greg Zeschuk, Trent Oster, Brent Oster, Marcel Zeschuk and Augustine Yip, founded Bioware Studios
In 2007 Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk sold Bioware to EA.
In 2009 EA started restructuring the company. (DA:Origins, ME2 released this year)
In 2012 Ray Muzyka, Greg Zeschuk left the company and went to other industries.

It all depends on how long Obsidians founders are willing to hold out until they go "fuck it, I just want the money" let Microsoft take over restructuring of the studio, and then hang around to make things look good for shareholders, before leaving.

PoE is very good for such a low budget niche title. PoE 2 is showing signs of the SJW rot but it may have been desperation for money and they'd already tried everything else they could think of.

They’re certainly hurting for money. I can’t find the info, but when they canned one of the old Fallout writers, he came out with insider info about how the company is terribly run. CEO’s wife having a high paying do nothing position levels of badly run.

Avellone is a giant egotistical asshole though so I would take anything he said with a grain of salt. He also said that Bethesda excels at making interesting environments to explore, far better than anything in New Vegas. Some combination of spite and shopping for a job.

It's a very large studio founded and structured to do AAA RPGs. It hasn't made a AAA RPG in many years. The mere fact they lasted this long is financial wizardry.

Avellone might be an egotistical asshole, but his work is superior to whatever dreck Obsidian is putting out now. He's also taken a stance of political neutrality in his work, which is always appreciated in this political climate. Unlike the idiots at BeamDog.

If Bethesda picks him up as a lead writer for Elder Scrolls or Fallout I might actually throw money at Bethesda again. Until then, I don't think they even have writers.

Good on him calling out Fig. Of course something helmed by Schafer would be cagey.
 
Obsidian and inXile are the two Black Isle splinter studios, aren't they? It'd be nifty to see the band back together. I hope that's Microsoft's plan, to just give the masters money and hope for the best. Overmanagement has always made their games suffer.

Avellone is a really good vidya writer and deserves most of the praise he gets for it. For some reason good writers tend to be assholes though. I don't know why, it's just the rule.

Still, Bethesda will just crush his creativity like it did all their half-decent writers.
