I would argue that forcing avatars is a bad thing in terms of privacy (there's a lot of reasoning behind that). You'd be surprised at how avatars can be used in following a users cookie crumb trail online.

I'm well aware of how avatars can be used as a trail for dox.

Most of the users who won't put up avas are 1. Socks 2. Verified faggots and persons of interest 3. Spergs who post garbage in a single subforum. Refusing to "add a visual element" still adds a visual element and leads to assumptions about the user that refuses to put up their own ava... which basically sums up to them looking like trash from one of the three groups I just mentioned.
