And maybe that's what they should have done with Resident Evil, 4 could have been a proper conclusion and then Dead Rising could take up the new mantle of "zombie series" and Haunting Ground could have been the new pure horror series, but obviously that's not what happened, I really wonder how much the death of Noboru Sugimura changed the direction of the company.
Onimusha could of been a nice combination of horror and action, fitting nicely between Dead Rising and Haunting Grounds. Sadly it wasn't meant to be.

OT: Can't seem to quote certain posters, not sure why.

It's an excellent game and House Beneviento is one of my favorite locations in any game in over a decade.
Agreed 100%, that whole part of the game was phenomenal, I only wish there was a little more to it.

Freaked me out more than anything in a game since the shoggoth chase in COC: Dark Corners.
The final encounter with Donna and her dolls is what freaked me out the most, a game hasn't scared me so bad since I was a teenager.

Onimusha has many moments that flirt with art-house. And then Gildenstern pulls out his cell phone.

Capcom is full of sarcastic, campy cunts.

What's the story with that? Onimusha has many moments that flirt with art-house, and then Gildenstern pulls out his cell phone.

Capcom is full of sarcastic, campy cunts. Either that, or Japanese work culture is so stifling that they look for escapism anywhere they can.
Best guess? A combination of things: Capcom not wanting to saturate the market with RE clones and pandering to non-horror fans. Onimusha 1 was RE in medieval Japan with magic powers. While this in hindsight was actually a pretty neat idea the western market wasn't really versed in Japanese horror which O1 draws on. O2 was more action-y to appeal to a wider audience with the horror toned way the fuck down so people wouldn't think it's another RE clone. O3 was flat out an action game with any horror elements completely gone. So Gildenstern pulling out a cellphone, while completely campy and the near opposite of horror, makes perfect sense if you're just going the pure action route Capcom was taking the series.

O2 and O3 could of kept the action and the horror elements if Capcom had dared to and it would of been good. The RE series could of focused on more horror with action wile the Oni series could of been more action blended with horror.

As for Dawn of Dreams, it was suppose to be a passing of the torch story in a ways, but they bungled to many damn story elements that they instead decided to just let the franchise die.

Which while breaks my heart, at least it means there won't be another Minokichi showing it's retarded face again.

I still miss dead rising.

I miss Frank.
I hate that we never got a proper follow up, while DR2 is solid, I just don't understand why development shifted from Japan to Canada, playing 1 and 2 back to back highlights how much better the first game is.

And then the series totally went to shit with 3.

I've always wondered what a Dead Rising sequel developed by the same team as 1 would have been like and like I said, I just don't understand why that didn't happen, I can only guess it came down to Keiji Inafune making the choice for whatever asinine reason and whatever asinine mentality was going around the Japanese development scene at that time.

Irony is is DR2 is pretty much the highlight of what was otherwise Capcom's dark age of 2009-2013 (I haven't played Dragon's Dogma yet but I remain curious and I know Street Fighter 4 was well liked, but eh), if it's one thing that I'm very thankful for about our modern world it's that Japanese game development got better and gamers in the west started appreciating Japanese games more.

Another great instance of "why make money when you can make ALL of the money" type thinking. Remember when they tried to push Umbrella Corps because e-sports was a thing?

Inifune made some decisions that cost them money. That's when Capcom decided to farm out the series to Vancouver. NDA agreements prevent us from ever knowing the full story, though. We can only make educated guesses about what Inifune wanted.

I haven't finished RE5 yet, mostly because I'm struggling to do so due to disliking it so much, but I already have some ideas on how it could have been a lot better while still sticking close to what it is.

If you insist on having Africa be the setting, for starters make the opening city more unique, much like how Raccoon City had a lot of unique aspects, have some European architecture from the old colonial days in the vein of Haiti or something like that, in other words add something to actually make it interesting instead of a totally generic Black Hawk Down style slum.

Then with the old Umbrella facility have it be kind of like Rockfort island with it's palace and private residence, ie this was a place where Spencer and the other founders spent a fair amount of time while harvesting the progenitor virus flower and turned it into a home away from home, so you can have some classic Spencer mansion type locales, but overgrown with jungle foliage, old meets new, again, do something actually interesting and not just generic concrete hallways.

Not sure how I'd change the ancient ruins as they're simultaneously the only interesting environment while also not really feeling appropriately Resident Evil, maybe instead of weird Mesoamerican type ruins it's like a lost Roman colony perhaps? That would feel a little more fitting for Resident Evil.

Finally drop the painfully generic cargo ship, I haven't seen the final area yet, but it should be a modern high tech Tricell lab kind of like the NEST at the end of RE2 Remake, we go from rundown African city, to dilapidated old facilities, to ancient ruins to a high tech modern lab, that'd be a more interesting contrast.

I don't think Africa is a good setting for RE in general but there's no reason why it couldn't have been done in a better, more interesting way than what we got.

Maybe we can get some Cheech Marin up in here.

Some random RE thoughts because I'm bored.

Still haven't beaten it yet but I feel confident in saying RE5 is the worst game in the series, even RE6 is better, RE6 at least has you visit some more interesting locales, adult Sherry is cool and it's cool to have Chris and Leon in the same game, what ruins RE6 is the pacing and the story, with better pacing and a not as stupid story it would have been an alright game, as is it it's still terrible but slightly less terrible than 5.

I will give credit to a few things in RE5 though, it handles Chris fine, he's not the deepest character so that's not hard to do, but it's something, I also don't hate it's depiction of Wesker, him using Jill as a mind controlled slave makes him feel like M Bison from Street Fighter, silly and over the top, but not bad, I also dig Jill's sexy catsuit and the sexy female villain, it reminds me of the sexy stuff in RE Revelations, kind of odd for the series to go heavy into T&A, but hey, I'm not complaining.

And now for some random musings on Code Veronica, the best parts of the game are when you return to the prison camp and find the experiment room and underground torture chamber, wonderfully creepy and when you visit the private residence, also wonderfully creepy, the worst parts though are when you revisit the training area as Chris and the Antarctica section kind of drags on.

I like how unique Code Veronica is for the series though, the only game with that specific 3D graphical style and overall vibe, halfway between the cheesy origins of the series and the higher production values of the later games.

Max payne 3 was fucking awesome. As a fan of the franchise, it was definitely the right call to change it up and give a unique spin on him. Only so many times you can shoot gangsters in new york.

Although I think in the beginning they were going to just cold open with bald fucked up max, and they had to delay the game because the fan's were not having it.

Drastic Change in a franchise can totally be accomplished, but it needs to be eased in and gradual.

Ive always wondered about Dead rising 4 and the trippy shit with that. I never played the originals and part of me liked the appeal of going nuts on zombies without having to worry about the clock.

The post ending DLC looks neat too, where frank turns into a smart zombie and has to cure himself.

I think the big issue with 4 is the new voice actor for frank, and I totally understand that.

I haven't played DR4 yet, eventually I plan on playing every game in the series though.

Is anyone looking forward to welcome to raccoon city? They're getting a street shitter to play Leon lol

I'm a bit confused, is this a theatrical movie or a Netflix? If it's theatrical why does it look so cheap?

RE5 is a fun game if you're playing with a friend. If you play it alone, it can be straight-up miserable.

The game is a massive departure from RE's winning formula, even more so than RE4. The latter at least pretended to have interconnected levels, with you revisiting some areas a couple of times.

Still, RE5 is a game I played the most. It's just super easy to pick up, and some of the levels offer this turn-your-brain-off excitement, imo.

RE6 has nice ideas here and there but it's too darn long.
