as flawed as 0 is, we will never, ever get horror games with the vibe of the RE games up to Zero/Code Veronica ever again, for good or ill.
that sort of "set in the 90's but rummaging through 70's infrastructure" and ominous tracks playing in the background like.

the worst part is you will get brief flickers, like gossamer threads in new games, that will just for a moment, make you feel or think about the old ones, Resident Evil Requeim is the one game that is MOST expected to have the old game vibe..but it will probably still be silent OST's and way too much character dialogue and all the trappings of modern horror games that sheds away that special atmosphere the older ones had.

Forgot to post this, a nearly complete version of Resident Evil for the Game Boy Color was released on the 17th, I'm aware that there was already a 90% complete version but this one is estimated to be 98%.

Anyone ever drawn the connection between the 1985 horror film "Lifeforce" by Tobe Hooper and Resident Evil 2 and 3, in particular as a major inspiration for the city-scape of a "fallen" Raccoon City in terms of scenery, lighting, colour pallette and the prevalence of burning buildings being depicted (not to mention Zombies stalking the city).

TLDR about the movie: Alien Vampires turn London into an apocalyptic hellscape with roaming Zombies at night - it's no masterpiece, but a very stunning film on a visual level and in terms of effects work in the 80s.

Lifeforce.jpg

I never seen Lifeforce before since yesterday, but the inspiration for the visual setting seemed so obvious to me, I almost felt more baffled after seemingly finding nothing online about this connection, aside from the fact that Shinji Mikami cites Tobe Hooper's Texas Chainsaw Massacre as major influence for RE in general, yet Mikami wasn't as deeply involved in RE2 and RE3 if I recall correctly.

I'll try to grab more screenshots later, as I am currently not at home, just for reference, here is an online gallery with some night scenes of London from the movie.

Edit: Here's some screenshots I took from a version I ripped, sadly its no bluray quality, but I think it's evident what I am trying to get across - ofc it is even more uncanny in motion, as basically the last 20-30 minutes (of the director's cut/international version with a 116min runtime) feels like a pure clipshow of the first 10 minutes of RE2 and the first half of RE3.

If I had the time and technical capabilities, I would do a side by side of the scenes from the film compared to the scenes in the games, but at least this should suffice for now - also, I am aware that "city on fire at night" is by far no super innovative scenery in filmmaking, but the film featuring Zombies on top makes it almost certain for me that the art direction team of capcom used this film as a reference in the late 90s, as to my knowledge, no other (Zombie)Horror movie had similiar lighting/framing/colour aside from 28 Days Later, which did release way after RE2/RE3 in 2002.

I mean, if you nuked a city and one of the few survivors who walked away from that nuke was a rookie cop, first day on the job, who went straight into the heart of that city to confront ground zero of the outbreak, wouldn't you want to hire him to protect the president? Makes sense to me.
It's what people complained about. They were retards arguing RE lore. It won't stop. It will never stop.

Yeah. I remember the first time I opened an item box in 7, for a brief moment there I felt the atmosphere of the old games. But then I closed the box, put Jack down with a couple of easy bullets to the head and went back to wandering around the house bored.

It's been a few years since I last saw Lifeforce. Can definitely see the similarities. I believe Roger from Dawn of the Dead was an inspiration for Leon's original design. Alfred in Code Veronica with his non-existent shooting skills also feels like a reference to this scene.

I'm surprised there hasn't been much of any red field bloodline memes regarding that time he was hanging out with literally every Capcom/Saga character.

Always wanted to get around to playing these games, altho that's mostly due to the fact that it's got some Dead Rising in it.

Same. Hopefully when the steam machine comes out I can emulate it. Heard the gameplay was a bit repetitive, but eh.

Frank's not in part 2, so he doesn't get to meet Leon sadly.

Around this time of year I habitually do a run of Resident Evil HD Remaster and wish they would make a sequel with this sort of gameplay.
No can do, the modern audience is too stupid so they had to turn RE2R into a third person shooter. If Signalis is anything to go by, indie games might be your only hope in the future if you're looking for more in that style.

The scariest thing about ai right now is how good it is at making fake conversations between two characters. This fucker understood the assignment perfectly

Chris Redfield: (bursting into the room, flexing unnecessarily) Frank! There you are. I've been thinking about the future. The Redfield bloodline—it's strong, resilient, zombie-punching stock. But Claire's off saving the world, and I'm... well, I'm me. We need to ensure it continues!

Frank West: (snapping a photo of Chris mid-flex) Whoa, easy there, Captain Muscles. I've covered wars, you know? But bloodlines? That's a new scoop. What's this got to do with me? You want me to interview your family tree?

Chris Redfield: (serious face, pounding fist into palm) No interviews! Action! You're tough, resourceful, got that camera that doubles as a weapon. Perfect genes to mix with Redfield DNA. I need you to... you know... step up and continue the line.

Frank West: (lowering camera, eyebrow raised) Continue the line? Like, what, adopt a puppy and name it Redfield? Or are you saying... wait, you want me to date your sister? Claire? The one who could kick my ass faster than a zombie horde?

Chris Redfield: (nodding vigorously) Exactly! She's single, you're single—probably. Imagine the kids: little zombie-slayers with your snarky one-liners and her aim. Come on, Frank, for humanity! The Redfields can't end with me grunting at B.O.W.s.

Frank West: (chuckling, backing away) Haha, oh man, this is gold. "Chris Redfield: Matchmaker Edition." But seriously, buddy, I'm more of a "survive the mall" guy than a "settle down and propagate" type. Plus, Claire once threatened to use my tripod as a baseball bat when I snapped her bad side

.Chris Redfield: (grabbing Frank by the shoulders) Think about it! Redfield-West hybrids: They'd punch through walls, take Pulitzer-worthy photos of the apocalypse, and probably bench-press helicopters. I'll even be the cool uncle who teaches them boulder-punching!

Frank West: (wriggling free, laughing) Alright, alright, Mr. Family Man. Tell you what—I'll consider it if you pose for my next zombie calendar. Deal? But if Claire says no, you're buying the drinks.

Chris Redfield: (grinning) Deal! Now, let's go find her before another outbreak ruins the mood. Redfield bloodline: secured!

Can someone explain the hate people have for RE0? I consistently see people rate it lower than 3make. I understand people don't like the removal of item boxes (I don't either), but I wouldn't say that alone justifies ranking it lower than 3make.
It's been a few years since I beat RE0, got the plat trophy around then and havnt touchdd it since so I don't remeber much. The shared inventory really sucked (as it did towards the end of CVX). Lack of item boxes especially following the RE1 remake wasn't fun to deal with either. The bat boss fight was shitty as well and as others have pointed out parts of the map seem like a shitty version of the Spencer mansion. I don't hate it but ultimately it's an unnecessary entry in the series. Also fuck the leech game.

It's been a long time but I remember the boss fights in 0 being really really really fucking shitty, like almost DMC2 level bad.

The game is legit pretty mid. RE3Make is fun despite being far too short and cutting out half the game. Also Jill at least seems like a logical evolution in RE3Make as her bitchy attitude throughout the beginning is said to be due to her trauma with Umbrella prior. Whereas RE0 makes RE1 Rebecca make 0 sense. Did Rebecca drink stupid slut juice after RE0 so she would forget Billy Coen existed? Did Billy knock her ass out with a haymaker? And the issue here is she was fine as a ditzy coward medic in RE1. Also RE0 doesn't really drive the plot anywhere. The prequel legitimately fucks up Rebecca and Enrico in RE1, puts the lab in RE2 far away from where it actually was, and does all of this while having every enemy just be easy as fuck insects and annoying as fuck monkeys.

Is was logical in RE3 OG. She's just a boss bitch cunt in the remake and everyone involved making her that way needs to die.
She shits on Carlos early on in the OG too for being an Umbrella mercenary. In fact, the worst part of the OG is how quick she goes from "Fuck you for causing this assclown." to "Guess you're a good guy now." In the Remake it takes until he saves her life. In the OG she hates him for 5 minutes. You're unironically a subsomalian iq.

You're the garden variety RE tourist. Stay on reddit for your updoots. Any defense of the 3 demake is revealing that you're a fucking nigger.

LMAO. Is that why you post here instead of an actual RE fan forum you coward? Pussy lips gerald over here calling me a nigger when he's clearly got skin blacker than his coal ass opinons. I'd call you a mother fucker. But in your African community it's a compliment. STFU fake fan. Tell me, when was the last time you even played a video game you low corrosive lump of fecal matter who dares call itself a human being? Fuck off and beg god for mercy for denying the gift of intelligence he went out of his way to grant you.

Now then. Since you hate RE3 Remake so much despite the fact you haven't played either game considering most of what you claim to despise is in both. Why don't you do yourself a favor and actually play them you fake fan.
