wasn't trying to make a qualitative statement about him, more a comparison re: expectation about length and detail that goes into the videos that (especially in the case of the Dark Souls 2 videos) focussed on more substantive things than just-story beats.
Yeah I get you.
but expected more than fluffy 'well, that's like, your opinion man' stuff when it comes to writing off a game as hyperbolically as she does
Right.
but we're starting to venture into a bigger discussion than I feel like when talking about Resident fucking Evil.
Yeah. I’m just hoping 9 isn’t neutered because the last two mainline games focused so much on Ethan and his retarded story.

Then you get these tards who think real Resident Evil don’t ever want new characters because Ethan was so badly received. No bitch, I don’t mind if I’m not playing as Chris/Jill/Leon/Claire/etc, I just want it to FEEL like Resident Evil. I love Jake, gimme more Jake honestly.
But to me, Resident Evil will always be where you’re playing as a cop/military/mercenary type in a zombie/horror situation. Prolly why I don’t like Ethan because he’s just a fucking random asshole. Hell, gimme a game where I play as just HUNK the whole time and I’ll be giddy.

I liked Ethan, especially what he goes through in 8 (but then again, I'm a dad too so I'm coming from a place of bias admittedly)

Ethan's pretty bland because the first-person perspective kinda turns him into the player and Capcom understood this required him to be more a blank slate than the other more over-the-top third-person fare they're used to making that thEmATicaLLy allow for you to you know, play as the character you're watching the whole game.

I was never upset with him but didn't walk away from the games ever going, wow what a great job they did with him. He's almost closer to a quiet version of Ash from Evil Dead with the amount of hilariously over-the-top abuse and dismemberment he goes through.

Yes, 8 hits a bit different after you have kids. But that goes for a lot of media these days in my opinion.

I understand that Resi7 was supposed to be a "return to roots" for the franchise while at the same time trying to appeal more to non-resi fans. So they wrote Ethan the way they did.

Do I think the latter was the right choice? Not really, but from a business perspective, they sure as hell did good lol

I like Ethan quite a bit actually, he's very whiny in 7 for obvious reasons but he has quite a change in personality in 8. They make it clear he's well trained and since it's not his first rodeo it's almost like he's over it already whenever crazy bullshit is happening in front of him. He's a lot more sarcastic and dismissive while also being way more confident. Whenever you kill a boss he's just so fed up in his one-liners. I'm pretty upset they offed him at the end cause I wanted to see more of him, he worked really well as a straight-man for the whacky rollcoaster that was 8.

The same argument gets made for Fallout 3 and 4 but that gets laughed off. Idk why 8 gets a break for it.

But there have been first person games where the character wasn’t a blank slate. Jason Brody from Far Cry 3 for example was a pretty good character that had good development. Various Call of Duty protagonists, Master Chief from Halo, Booker Dewitt from Bioshock Infinite, JC Denton from Deus Ex, and even Jack Driscoll in the Peter Jackson’s King Kong game was great.

Well, 8 at least somewhat course corrects and feels a lot more like a Resident Evil game than 7 despite all the spooky Vampires, Werewolves and supernatural crap.

But it wasn’t.

I can't help but think that if Ethan lived for another few games, they really could have made him an iconic character! Of course they took Leon's playbook for him, but he could have been "molded" (lol) into someone who stood apart from the others while still having something that would make him a great part of the universe!

Instead he's sacrificed and Chris is still around because Chris is marketable.

I think he is, he's definitely higher up than Rebecca or Barry for me.
This is the defining moment for Ethan as a character for me. He's given an ultimatum to team up or die and without hesitation he just lets go. There's this implicit "Whatever's down there I've dealt with worse and after I'm done with it I'm coming back for you" it's a great moment that puts him right up there with the main 4 for me.

Chris was supposed to die in 6 but that got changed sometime in development. He even kinda sets a death flag at one point saying how he wants to retire "after all this is over" and that Piers should be the one take his spot. Now he's still fighting into his old age.

I am tired of developers making "games for dads" and the only story is how much of a Dad you are and you have to protect/raise your kid. It's all over the place now and the stories aren't very compelling. Rose could have been 4 mansion keys and it wouldn't have changed the game in the slightest. RE7 has a better family dynamic than 8 does and 8 is supposed to be about your family.

When did Chris become marketable? Most people never played RE1 Chris. Jill was the default and Chris was considered the hard mode. RE5 comes out and Chris is considered a big deal and Jill is background dressing. It's a weird change from what I knew of the franchise.

Don't ask me lol

My gateway to the series was Resi6 for crying out loud - I don't think I'm qualified to talk about this stuff

Ethan has next to no personality or character of any kind - It doesn't help that the two games were extremely adverse to showing his face, going out of their way to actively hide his face in scenes and stuff.

One of the first trailers for Village where Chris guns down Mia in their house, Ethan has this admittedly well-delivered "Nooo! Why!?", but in the final game, for some fucking reason, they changed that line to a "What? Why?", he sounds mildly annoyed instead, like Chris just cut in line at the supermarket or something, lmao.

Chris has been the face of the series for a while now (he's literally the cover art for Village) and regardless of what RE1 defaults to most people are going to pick Chris since he's the guy. Also the meme that Chris is "hardmode" is a bit tired when he gets significatly better weapons and more ammo in exchange for his 2 inventory slots. If anything Jill is handicapped beimg able to sequence break with her lockpick in exchange for being worse in combat.

I'm sorry you don't like cool characters.

That and Chris was also the face of the cover for the very first RE game, was advertised first in both the character selection screen and in the live-action cast intro. You were considered a badass gamer if you managed to beat the game with Chris back in the day. I do remember a lot of people using Jill for her bazooka and her lock picking abilities though.
