Does anyone have Wii/ Gamecube recs? I was a young kid when they were modern and going back and playing all my old favorite games, I am realizing they are massively unfun. Like I loved My Sims and playing it now, it's just total trash.

Are there any people here who were teens/adults during that era who know some games that actually hold up? So far I've liked Pikmin 2, Endless Ocean, and Viewtiful Joe
Gonna +1 Fortune Street, it's best played with friends but the single player is fun too.

For GC, more mainstream recs would be Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes, Resident Evil (remake), the ports of RE2 and 3 (they have updated "Type C" controls that IMO make them nicer to play), perennial favorite Soul Calibur 2, and the Super Monkey Ball games. Less well known might be Zelda; Four Swords Adventures -- it's often forgotten and some people really dump on this game but it's one of my fav in the series especially with another player.

On Wii there's a lot more variety but I'll stick to a few. It was recently re-released on Switch but I found Another Code R to be really special. Other games you may not have heard of are Shiren the Wanderer, the first of that whitelabel Mystery Dungeon series released in English, and Ju-On: The Grudge.

earlier about ps1 emulating at 240p, I'm not a hundred percent but I'm pretty sure the PS1 outputted at a lot of weird resolutions and just squished them into NTSC, like I recall Bleem! going into something like 640x800 or something very odd for KoF97's art gallery mode at points, similarly Thunder Force V doing the menus at something 4:3 but higher than total butt resolutions
Ju-On: The Grudge.
is that anything like the Ring game for Dreamcast?

unrelated I'm probably going to replace the battery on my PSP
is there anything super-important to know about getting one off ebay?

Not a big Wii guy (pun intended), but here's some 3rd party GC recommendations (Nintendo was in top form during GC, so I'd just list virtually every 1st party release):

Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life
Lost Kingdoms
Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes
Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg
Mega Man Network Transmission

Trying to avoid being absurdly obvious, but, if you like Zelda, then Wind Waker and Twilight Princess are worth playing. Personally prefer the GC version of TP, but if you prefer waggling, the Wii version is fine.
Mario Sunshine is a love it or hate it experience.
Both Gamecube Metroid Prime games are pretty high on my list
The trilogy release is pretty botched for MP1 and MP2. Difficulty got absolutely botched for MP2, and both of the GC titles are missing various visual effects. I have personal gripes about freelook trivializing a lot of the GC titles because they were designed with the "look or move" controls in mind. Motion controls are nice and responsive, at least.
F-Zero GX is the best its series has seen.
Mario Kart Double Dash is fun if you have friends.
Eternal Darkness is very enjoyable if you let yourself get immersed in the thinly veiled Lovecraftian story.
Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 have "improved" ports that are divisive.
Skies of Arcadia Legends is very, very good.
MGS Twin Snakes is interesting if you're familiar with the original, but I wouldn't recommend it as a first experience.
Tales of Symphonia is there.

For Wii, it's a lot more scattered.
Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 are very well regarded bing bing wahoo
Kirby's Epic Yarn
Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom is a good time if you're into hyper fighters
Punch-Out!! is really solid
MadWorld is a Platinum beat 'em up. If that means something to you, then check it out.
Metroid Prime 3 is by far the weakest of the trilogy, but it's worth your time if you liked MP1 and 2.
Silent Hill Scattered Memories (mixed recommendation)

Some titles that have been ported, so that neither GC nor Wii are my recommended way to play them anymore
Donkey Kong Country Returns
Skyward Sword
Xenoblade Chronicles
Resident Evil (Remake) and 0

I've been playing F-Zero GX and boy is it hard lol. I've learned that my friends are hugely fond of Double Dash so that's been coming out a lot. i've actually never played a Zelda game, so maybe I'll play Twilight Princess, but I love horror so I'll probably start with Eternal Darkness!

Thanks everyone for the awesome recs!

The PS1 did use a lot of odd resolutions, but that wasn’t unique to the system, it was a industry wide practice on prior and following consoles too. Developers often took advantage of interlaced modes and the PS1’s lack of fixed resolution constraints to optimize performance or enhance graphics. For example, Tekken 3 runs at 512x240, stretching the picture to help with performance. Chrono Cross uses higher resolutions for menus compared to gameplay for a better picture quality for the text and the portraits. While I haven’t played KoF97 on PS1, it makes sense that SNK might have used a higher resolution for the art gallery to maximize detail. And as a weird bonus, Bubsy 3D is one of the few games that pushes the PS1 to its maximum resolution, though the rest of the game didn’t benefit much from that decision

The PS2 continued this practice too. Some games like Gran Turismo 4 and Tourist Trophy supported 1080i for gameplay while rendering menus at 480i, but only on NTSC versions and using the composite video cable

Thinking about buying a steamdeck for emulation of Jap only games like namico x Capcom. Any advice or comments?

FZGX is hardcore as hell, the whole series is really tough but GX in particular comes out swinging. Double Dash is the best multiplayer MK game for sure (still prefer DS slightly).

Twilight Princess kinda has some slight horror elements/aesthetics, it's one of the darker games in the series, behind Majora's Mask, so it sounds like a good starting point for you. Get around to Wind Waker too if you can.

Do it, but if you can afford the OLED I'd choose that, if only because it's slightly lighter and this sucker is big.

Personally I just want to use it as a PC console and stick it into my TV.
If you're not gonna use it portably then the basic model is actually the better choice then since it's cheaper. It's very easy to use and strong enough to run lots of emulation well, and most Steam games too.

Twilight Princess definitely had an horror touch on some parts of the game, Nintendo tried hard to shake the kids image after Wind Waker

The best Mario Kart game would be with 64's battle mode and single racers (no double gimmicks) and DD's handling, controls, graphics, and roster, with the tracks a mix of both.

There might be a mod that addresses some of these issues.
64 has the same issue as a lot of N64 games in that it's good, but the framerate makes it hard to go back to on original hardware. 3-4 player Mario Kart 64 legit dips to like 15 frames a second.

Of course the FPS is a major issue, that and it turns off the music for 3+ players. On a technical level DD is the better game in terms of frame rate and handling. (Wii and up are too floaty).

Honestly, I grew up with Diddy Kong Racing. I’ve never played MK64. Playing MK64 is a weird, unfun experience in comparison to DKR. Sure, the multiplayer might be better, but how often do you actually play multiplayer Mario Kart?

The best MK game would be DS but with all the content from other MKs, plus the graphics of DD (but like an HD remaster). Absolute perfection.

To be honest, I might get pilloried for this, but I honestly this the best Mario Kart game is Mario Kart 8, and I'm old enough to have played the original for SNES when it was new. It's unusual for me to think a game released in the last 10 years is the best in the series, but that's one particular instance where I think they nailed it. I could see not liking it if you really like battle mode, but I've always been all about the racing.

Make it 8 Deluxe specifically and I firmly agree, complete with much improved battle modes. I played every game more or less in order and 8 really is just that good. Though a lot of the DLC tracks are forgettable, with music that isn’t as good as the original batch.

the only thing I don't like about in 8 is how in online mode you're only locked to 4 random tracks to pick instead of choosing your own and then having the roulette do the pick like how it was in 7.
