Retro games and emulation - Discuss retro shit in case you're stuck in the past or a hipster

It's kinda crazy how quickly this drama ballooned, makes me scared for the future of the project if drama is enough to have your main guy leave the team. I really want to support IISU cause it's a good idea
I don’t, I’m not touching this thing or its community if the main guy got kicked out. NeoStation is our only hope now.

All this goes to show that people don't hate leftists nearly enough. We need to get to a point where being afraid to say nigger is a bigger scandal than saying nigger.

I can say without a doubt that this would've been a game changer and revolutionized the hobby, but because nigger hurts leftist feefees, we can't have nice things and will have to pay goytendo's outrageous prices for the rest of time if we want to play retro games on the go.

I recently loaded my own Wii up with light gun games and rotated it back into active duty, being disappointed by the inferior motion controls of the modern day and as-yet unwilling to drop money for a Sinden. Some say it's just not the same, but I honestly prefer pointing a cursor with a wiimote to squinting down the sights of a plastic gun for half an hour. Excited to try "Chicken Riot" for the first time, as it's purported to be the finest of the three chicken-themed light gun games available on Wii.

Sadly, Virtual Console really dropped the ball here: there are almost no real light gun games at all. Nearest thing are two JP-only 3D arcade games: Starblade and Solvalou. I think they both originally used a giant spaceship stick, but it ultimately the main task is to point a laser at stuff, so it's close enough. Both of those are likely getting modern ports through Arcade Archives within the next couple of years, and unfortunately the controls are bound to be pretty awful. I know it's possible to use motion controls with emulators, but for the moment I'm liking being able to access each game from the system menu (with forwarder channels) without having to drill into anything else.

(ChatGPT is telling me only NES wad injection can handle light gun controls and there's no way to directly launch a particular MAME etc light gun game from the sys menu, VERY GAY. But yeah I totally forgot the three whole NES VC light gun games, but VC stretches them to widescreen so eh not bothering)

Despite wii homebrew being an easy thing for dummies, and my best effort to make a clean-looking setup, it still feels pretty jank. Wii games sometimes load very slowly, or occasionally, not at all, probably for no reason I'm ever going to figure out (powering off and trying again fixes it). Oh well good enough. But tbh if there were a modern official product that hooked up to a TV in five minutes and played House of the Dead etc (properly), I'd probably buy that and not mess with this.

What? I don't see what iiSU dying has to do with you no longer being able to emulate. it's just a frontend they didn't take down your emulators. ES-DE, Daijisho, Beacon, etc are right there if you really want fancy menus to open your roms.

I highly doubt they would've been able to deliver half their promises in 2026 if this is the current state of the app

Even popular games like Mario Kart 64 and Mario Tennis are filled with graphical glitches in emulators after all these years.
Have you tried these games on Ares? I grew up with Mario Tennis and when I play it on that emulator I don't see any issues, even with things like the instant replay transitions or scoreboards which were bugged for a long time. Ares has problems but you could probably find other modern emulators that are just as accurate. You may be using an outdated version of whatever emu you use.

A lot of N64 emulators have per-game hacks baked in, especially for Nintendo-published stuff, so the emulator may not really be that accurate.

Between what just happened with iisu and the debacle with retro achievements, these devs really just need to tell these fags to fuck off.
The best way of dealing with it is just to ignore it unless it's a major incident that you actually can't ignore it without getting called out by almost everyone. Giving any attention to issues from a minority of select people will only help grow it to become a potential issue that will become an headache later on to deal with.

The debacle with Retro Achievements would of been best just to let it die down by not humoring the people who were mad about it. Retro Achievements requires a community of people to contribute who know how to search and find out what certain addresses do in the RAM and actually code around that so that certain conditions are met to get certain achievements. The amount of people in the community who can actually do this is are not that big so wanting to not split and reduce the amount of active and potential devs is understandable. Naturally they decided to address the issue and it split the community as a result.

Really Devs who don't want to deal with internet drama should just learn to keep their mouth shut and ignore these people like they aren't worth shit. It would work wonders for them in the long run.

I know this is going to sound completely retarded here, but I'm curious how much AI coding is going to help with optimising emulators in the future.

It might legit become a good venture for someone to create a Duckstation quality N64 emulator from scratch in a few years time.
The problem with AI code as things are now is that code is useless if you don't know how it works. This is the problem with Indians, their AI code is worthless because they have no idea how to move forward with it or understand how it works.

I don't know all the technical ins and outs of of it, but apparently there's this complex, custom microcode in most N64 games which basically makes a good universal emulator impossible, so emulators are explicitly written with specific games in mind. I'd bet more on source ports becoming the norm for N64 games. Even popular games like Mario Kart 64 and Mario Tennis are filled with graphical glitches in emulators after all these years. There are 60FPS source ports for Mario 64, Mario Kart, Star Fox, Ocarina of Time and Majoria's Mask, and they're all really really fucking good.

Sucks if you're a fan for something that will never get ported like Gauntlet Legends, or Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey, though.
I believe both Paper Mario and Banjo-Kazooie both got reverse-engineered but there's not any ports for them. The thing is that there probably aren't going to be homebrew titles for the N64, and the number of N64 titles is both well-documented and finite.

A lot of N64 emulators have per-game hacks baked in, especially for Nintendo-published stuff, so the emulator may not really be that accurate.
Doing a quick search of Ares' source doesn't bring up any per-game hacks, at least for the N64, unless I'm missing something.

A few extra things about the iiSU/UsagiShade drama:
[PreserveTube Archive]
A reupload of the full reveal
A Reddit summary of everything that's happened so far
Is he really cancelled, or is it just a few retards bitching? I'm checking some Reddit communities like r/emulation and r/retroarch and i'm seeing no word of this. Most of the discourse seems to be on Twitter where the usual pronoun people are making accusations of transphobia and bigotry, normal people don't seem to care though.

Here's some more crying over it on Bluesky [archive] and I believe the source of the screenshots @Twin Addler posted:

As a general rule, AI is always 5 years off of doing everything, so you can expect it to automatically build N64 emulators by 2030. However, next year it will still be 5 years off, and it'll be pushed back by 2031. We'll keep doing that until Microsoft runs out of money.

Performance. ZSNES ran more acceptably on weaker systems.
This is correct. I had a 486 at the time when I first got into emulation and ZSNES was able to run on it with relatively few issues, including the “powerful” games and games with unique chipsets like Super Mario RPG, StarFox, etc. Conversely, I don’t think SNES9x ever loaded up. Probably required a Pentium. ZSNES and NESticle were my go-tos when I had a 486.

I don't get the point of a frontend like this? How hard is it to just open a file like a normal person? It's different with PC games because they're usually an executable floating in a file system somewhere but all of these roms and .isos are neatly self contained.
In most cases, front ends just make it easier to adjust settings, which can be a huge pain if you’re raw-dogging a command line.

Making things more convenient is something most people want. Getting settings tweaked just right without a front end can be like learning a second language with some emulators.

I don't get the point of a frontend like this?
It's a nice way to organise your library in one place, anyone who messes around with emulation probably has hundreds if not thousands of games across multiple systems. Though I'm not entirely sure what the benefit of this one is over all the existing front ends already out there.

What I don't get is why the fuck anyone in 2025 would give a single fuck what deranged troons on the internet have to say. I thought we cracked the code on this over a decade ago

Like, what the fuck are they going to do, leave a mean comment about you on twitter? Oh no, the tragedy.

iisu lead dev turned their private friend group discord into the public iisu discord like a retard instead of just making a new server. iisu dev is now cancelled just because he said funny words with his friends. I think the idiots assumed hiding discord channels actually hides them.

This is why you don't make the discord chat with the boys public.
Seriously, all they had to do was make a new server and this would have never happened.
