Retro games and emulation - Discuss retro shit in case you're stuck in the past or a hipster

Very nice, but might I add:

Bookworm
Bubble Bobble: Old & New
Chu Chu Rocket
Contra Advance: The Alien Wars EX
Mario Golf: Advance Tour
Mario Tennis: Power Tour
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team
Puyo Pop Fever
Sonic Battle
Yu-Gi-Oh!: The Eternal Duelist Soul

Some of these have better versions on other systems, but your list already has ports anyway.
I'm not so concerned about ports, sometimes the lower end ones are cool. The Gyakuten Saiban / Ace Attorney games are "better" on DS but I'd like to play them on GBA anyway. And something like Puyo Puyo Fever is a very different experience on GBA vs other platforms.

feel like the b-team, being relegated to making portable games, because the company doesn't want to use their best talent on handhelds.
one thing a B team could do is not follow what the home console did, and get away with doing whatever that B team wanted to do.
cute.png ugly.png
this is the same movie tie in game, the one on DS is a way better experience
I've played it recently and it's a cute little platformer with some puzzles mixed in.
the little tard animations the rabbit does are really funny

if you do plan on playing it, get the physical copy now. it's like 10 bucks now
and this shit is one youtube meme review away from becoming this shit:

Could I do it from memory? Maybe? Feel like my list is pretty robust and just at a glance I'm missing Boktai 2 and 3.
I don't want to be THAT guy, but you should really add Hamtaro: Ham-Ham HeartBreak to that list.
from my 2 Ham-Ham sessions it's an extremely well made game. it sold me when I was scammed by the same hamster twice.

Well it works the other way around, too. Maybe e.g. Silksong is okay for people who were in middle school in 2017 and have Hollow Knight nostalgia, but if you're used to something like Donkey Kong it's hard to get worked up over it.
there are some genres that have been mature for a lot longer than others. Super mario bros 3 is basically the gold standard for how to do a 2d platformer and it came out in 1988. There are very few games on that level. Super mario world isn't even on that level. Yoshi's island? N? People still make shitty derivative platformers that fail to reach the level attained 35 years ago. Remember Super Meat Boy? It's just an N clone. Doesn't even do anything new. it's a bad game.

real time strategy games basically matured with starcraft. Tiberium Wars is a bit dated to try and play now but Yuri's Revenge is fine. Supreme Commander is basically just the concept scaled up 10x and that game came out 20 years ago. It's even more dire with turn based strategy

Super mario world isn't even on that level.
Based take. I beat that game for the first time fairly recently and there are so many knowledge checks I thought I was playing a Sonic game.

Yes, Mario 3 has knowledge checks, too, but SMW abuses them.

Switching carts on an NES wasn't sketchy unless you were a fucking mongoloid who didn't take care of his things.

Perfect N64 emulation is pointless anyway, since all N64 games were shit to begin with.
Almost every top ten list for the n64, is made of the same 10–15 games, because they are the only games worth playing. The issue with teh n64 is once you leave that top ten, the system is mostly dogshit, there's not really any hidden gems or weird low-budget experimental games worht playing like with the ps1, and saturn even. With the PS1, you could take ten people and their top ten list could be completely different. There' just so much good stuff on those systems.

one thing a B team could do is not follow what the home console did, and get away with doing whatever that B team wanted to do.
Some cases it's like that. But most multiplatform games that got released on handhelds are either the most generic possible beat'em up/platformer you could make. Or they try too hard to force 3d game design onto a weak 2d handheld. Working within the limitions is the biggest indicator of quality for a game on weaker hardware. It's why you have so many shitty, FPS or Isometric games on the Game Boy, developers try to come up with ad hoc ways to make 3d style games on systems like the DS and Gba.

super mario world is tailor designed for a nine year old and a 13 year old pair of brothers to play the game, i think that was literally a design consideration by the team

See if you switch out N64 for Wii U this is true.

N64 on the other hand is such a cool platform and there are a bunch of hidden games people don't really think about especially when you get into Japanese games, for example:
Bomberman 64
Bomberman 64: Arcade Edition
Bomberman 64: The Second Attack
Bomberman Hero
Densha de GO! 64
Magical Tetris Challenge
Shiren the Wanderer 2: Oni Invasion! Shiren Castle!
Puyo Puyo SUN
Puyo Puyo~n Party
Rakugakids
Wonder Project J2
And there's plenty more to like that aren't really "top 15" calibur:
Doom 64
Gauntlet Legends
Gex 64
Goemon's Great Adventure
Jet Force Gemini
Kirby 64
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Master Quest
Mario Golf
Mario Tennis
Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon
The New Tetris
Ogre Battle 64
Pilotwings 64
Pokemon Puzzle League
Pokemon Snap
Resident Evil 2
Sin and Punishment
Turok
Turok 2
Turok 3
Wave Race 64
It's not hundreds or thousands of games, it's not got the breadth or depth of say PS1, but it's a really solid system, and I appreciate how different it is to play vs more modern consoles. It's bizzaro controller is so iconic.

I'll take 100 shitty handheld games over any modern mobile gacha/live service slop.
if there's one thing I've learn from retro games. it's this:

I WISH we still had small bad handheld games.
now I have to wait YEARS for shit like concord/Highguard to drop then have my fun shitting on it for like 2 weeks until it's impossible to ever play it again.

imagine that. REALLY expensive master classes of shit. erased forever.
Back in my day, you could still play bad games for free. zoomies will just think shit like concord was just an elaborate AI meme.

Don't forget about Tetris 64, the one with a heart rate monitor that's used in a mode.

It doesn't seem like the mod will be stopping development anytime soon as there's still 8 other active contributors who've already been helping to make updates, however it will definitely be a bit longer for updates now that 2 of the original devs are gone. Already their names have been removed from the credits on the main website.

Brief update but it looks like the team is now down to only 3 devs

The subreddit r/THPS is now locking all past posts about the drama and will be monitoring any future posts about it.

For anyone trying to install the mod, they're currently transferring the repo to a different server so you'll need this ini file for the time being

I'll try not to post anything else about this topic in here unless something super retarded happens so to not completely derail the thread. Personally this game was a big part of my childhood so I'm really sad to see this happening. Hopefully it will all blow over at some point.

Speaking of rethawed @Julius Caesar The 187th made a Sektur mod pack that im 99% will be taken down since these people are such fags. I mean you could just ask him for the files but it being from their servers is funnier. Play as the gunt instead of all the gooner models and horse girls.
Thanks for the mention. Currently working on Smash Pack Volume 2 focused on the Kino Casino

How likely will this mean that the mod gets abandoned in its entirety? Even if we assume that it'll be shadow developed by the same team like that one poster who talked about thier experience with one of the lead devs thinks so, the question would then come down to weither or not its going to be a lot harder to get or you'd basically have to know someone who knows one of the devs to even experience it.

Could be that the devs who left split into differnt team and make their own strain of the mod? But that's always the prelude to death for most projects. The orignal OP that bought up the drama said there was another big mod, so I could be they just combine going forward.

You should really reconsider this. The Dragon Warrior games are arguably best on NES, even factoring in the nice SFC remakes of the first 3. They really nerfed the difficulty, and the grind in DW1 really makes the game, without it it's really short and unsatisfying. Dragon Warrior 2 on NES feels so much more epic and each new area can just feel so foreign with how tough some of the monsters are -- here grinding isn't really needed until the endgame but each fight feeling more risky helps a lot. I could keep going but they aren't really "aged" it's more that they're from a different era. The remakes of Final Fantasy 1-3 have similar caveats to the experience, it's not really the same anymore.
Did we play the same game? The grind in DQ is retarded. You have to spend the first 30 minutes grinding slimes to buy copper gear, before you can leave the starting area, only to repeat the process again for the next tier of weapons in the town over. The game is like 10–15 hours, but only 5 of those feel of value. I spent like 2–3 hours grinding wizards before I entered the Dragon lords castle and I was still underleveled and had to abuse save states to manipulate battles in my favor.

It's like a 3 hour game if you remove the grind and has no real purpose, story, or anything.

The first Dragon Warrior is about defining your own milestones, like the challenge of getting to the next town, and telling your own story along the way. For ex, a lot of fans discover strategies to optimize grinding, early on there's a small piece of land near Tantegel Castle (it's a nice place to grind because you can heal for free) that has much stronger monsters -- getting yourself strong enough to fight in the "scorpion nest" is fun, beating your first scorpion is an accomplishment, and getting past that point is a milestone of its own.

They removed the scoprion nest in the SFC/GBC remake. You accumulate experience like 4-5x as fast. It's a neat experience in it's own right, I like the visual changes, but it plays completely differently.

Is THUGPRO still being worked on or has it been abandoned in favor of ReTHAWed? It's been awhile since I've kept up with the THPS modding scene.
I think it still is technically, but most people have been moving towards ReTHAWed since there's more potential. Last time I tried THUGPRO there were a bit more levels but other than that it's mainly focused on online multiplayer and free-skate (no story mode)

Whereas ReTHAWed pretty much has every single skater and a bunch of create-a-skater options plus the ability to play the classic mode tour for THPS 2 & 3, THUG 2, Project 8, and THAW. It also has an option to change the physics engine which I really like, like being able to use THPS 1's physics, THUG, or even Proving Grounds "realistic" physics where you have to press up to push and gain speeds.

Last update for THUGPRO was in 2023 with the project starting in 2013, so it's not dead but ReTHAWed is proving to be a better alternative and I think it's getting really close to surpassing THUGPRO's level count

I would like to say that it is immensely faggy shit to try and remove developer credits over stupid beef. I have seen project forks be made persona non grata by any devs with skill back in the day for that kind of stunt.

If those devs left on the site had any integrity they would quit immediately.

There isn't much of a story to tell because there is very little to do(no side content, no classes, linear equipment progression), the game is open, but there's not much to it. And he strategies to grind aren't that much of a time saver. I tried to use as little help as possible, but I still checked a guide for the grind and there's nothing to really anything to help you, aside from grinding the wizards outside Cartlin in the late game(The dragon lord castle has good enemies, but it's too risky), and the castle spot early game(the scorpion nest you call it?), because both give "good" XP and they spawn right next to a town where you can heal. It still takes hours of grinding over the whole game. It's a game that's very shallow, and loves to waste your time to pad out the length. I'm sure in '86 it was fine, but it's complete garbage when DQ3/4 exist on the same system.

I've tried to run ReThawed a couple times but it's a real fucker to set up. The guide on the trooncord is wrong and doesn't tell you precisely which cracked copy to download etc. Bunch of pussyfooting about copyright, like I get it but the kayfabe "I'm not allowed to tell you that" bullshit is a bit much.
