Happy 20th anniversary to one of the best Rockstar Games additions that were not GTA and Red Dead Redemption-related. I might just go on eBay and get the game for almost $30 because why not.


I put this right up there with Bully and Midnight Club as the best thing that the Rockstar ever made. It makes me (almost) want to play Manhunt 2, and I can talk about that sequel all day, questioning why it wasn’t as great as the first.

Question:

Can someone name an emulator for Gameboy that actually DOES have Super Gameboy functionality.. including the borders (both the built-in ones and any that load with a game?)

I've seen emulators *claim* to have this but really they just put the games in color. I wanted to show online friends this stuff but right now my only option is to use an actual super gameboy (which I do have, but I don't have a capture device and webcam loses detail).

I just loaded Pokémon Red in mGBA and saw the borders. Then again the ROM I have has "SGB enhanced" in the filename, so it could be a hack idk.

not really advice just as someone who grew up on that shit, If he's 5 make sure to hook him up with some of the Disney PC games. A lot were just interactive storybooks or whatever but there was this 101 Dalmatians game that was like baby's first adventure game I remember kicking ass at his age. there were also some star wars ep 1 educational games I really liked at that age if he likes that. there were also some superhero themed activity center mini game collection things and i used to fuck heavy with the superman one because you could write a newspaper story and print it out and i used to type up bullshit about what happened in my day at kindergarten and present it to my dad as today's news lol. Avoid Sonic's Schoolhouse I remember nothing specific but I was pumped for it because I liked the cartoon and sega games and I remember it sucked even for edutainment. I'd also recommend Roller Coaster or Zoo Tycoon & it's expansions because they're easy to pick up and a kid can learn a lot about basic economic stuff and think they're just playing a video game. Nowadays you could probably get a little 2TB drive for $20 and throw damn near any game a kid his age would ever be interested in on it.

SameBoy claims to have SGB emulation.

I don't think those are hacks, that tag is for games that were "regular" GB games but if you put it in a SGB you got the colors/borders. Depending on the emulator you might have to turn those effects on.

TI-94/A had a crazy good edutainment library for a warmed-up MSX, speech synth meant the kid didn't even have to read, they even had pre-K titles that only needed the kid to recognize 1, 2, 3 and 4

yes, 2023 games. particularly Namco arcade games are the ones that have live monitors, making it harder to emulate.

particularly Gundam EXVS2 Overboost. This arcade game requires it to connect to a live monitor in order to run.

This is a live monitor. it is not a arcade machine that you can play game, but the EXVS machines have to connect to it for them to be able to run. What does it do? nothing, but you can monitor live fights on all the EXVS machines connected to it and watch your recorded stats.

example of someone playing the game emulated most likely.

Now, it is not hard to emulate the game itself. it is not hard to set up the live monitor. the problem for me is setting up the game and the live monitor in a single PC and able to play.

That's an interesting emulation conundrum to have to deal with. I was tangentially aware of some modern jap arcade games, but had no idea there was an emulation scene for them, though it makes sense with how alot of those games just never come out over here.

“Edutainment” may be a stretch, but the classic Backyard Baseball/Football/Soccer games are great. Anything 2003 or older, I think they all run on Windows 95.

Several GB emulators include borders and possibly SGB-exclusive effects as others have said, but the Mesen-S and BSNES RetroArch cores support actual Super Game Boy emulation, with everything you can do on the real thing. I’d also suggest using a Super Game Boy 2 rom instead of SGB1 for better accuracy.

Doesn't the SGB2 though contain different built-in borders?

One border I always loved was that sign where you can see a cabin in the background. I used to like pausing until the sky turned night and the cabin turned a light on, and then playing the game that way.

Oh yeah, I forgot there were some SGB1-exclusive borders. So it’s not an objective upgrade depending on your priorities.

EDIT: Actually, you can still access the old borders with a code!

we talkin physical stuff or scanned archives?

Becuase if the latter, Sega Retro is where you'd want to go. Each game page has a section at the bottom of scanned copies of manuals and labels in PDF and picture form respectively.

The ones on Sega Retro split the top and face of the label. I'm looking for the whole labels so they can be printed out.
