Hell yeah, Vimm has provided me with countless hours of vidya game enjoyment, with not really much profit to be had(afaik his ad revenue mainly just helps keep his servers going). Vimm is based as hell. His website is the only one I have whitelisted on my adblocker lol. (same)

It's worth reiterating though, that his site isnt down at all. Every single non-Nintendo published game is still available, including full PS1, 2, and 3 libraries, as well as anything sega related, and even all other games on nintendo's own platforms. I know that nintendo is the main draw of the emulation hobby, but theres so many other great games still on Vimm's site that its unreal. And the nintendo published games are readily available on many other sites. Just wanted to clarify for the sake of the thread's posterity.

Pizza tower reminded me of Wario Land 4, so I got that recently. It's amazing how fun it is, love that era of sprite work too. Little did I know it was created by the team that worked on Metroid zero mission. They share gameplay elements so it makes sense. Next on the block is a Castlevania game I have wanted to play since childhood but never got the chance.

Any time a game has good art it makes me want to at least check it out.

Yes, it’s AliExpress, but I’ve been neglecting my NES for a little bit. That’s why I’m thinking about getting this multicart.

I’m probably going to do the same thing with the Genesis pretty soon.

I got my multicart specifically because it had a couple games that other multis didn't. But be forewarned, if it's like mine, every game shares the same save battery, so if you save in Game X it will eat your Game Y save file.

Apparently the "modern" multicarts do support multiple saves. The old multicarts that have been floating around for years would have a mix of mapper-hacked games, basic NES games with copyrights removed, pirate "originals", and so on. And they'd NEVER have the number of games advertised.

Codename S.O.D.A. to be exact. Memories are faint of it but it seemed more fun when I was younger, just Dexter's Laboratory. Unlike the Spider-Man movie tie in, I can finish levels without breaking a sweat. Fuck Kraven's serum bullshit.

Is it worth buying a PS2 if I don't have a CRT? A friend gave me a spare FreeMCBoot card and I'm willing to buy a refurbished PS2 fat so I could just keep games on a hard drive. I was wondering if the input lag would be unbearable enough on a flatscreen TV to be worth the purchase of a PS2 as opposed to just emulating PS2 games like I've been doing so far. I have a fairly large backlog of PS2 games that I still have to get through, so I wouldn't mind the investment into things like a RetroTINK if I have to get one (jesus fuck they're 325??).

If you are going to get a RetroTINK, get the 2X-pro, i have the original 2X model and it has worked for me pretty well, i've even used it to connect old consoles to an old PC CRT and the games look great in it, the 5X and 4K models are too expensive to justify a purchase, if you really need to upscale to higher resolutions, there are cheaper alternatives like the OSSC and the GBS-C, each one with their own advantages and disadvantages.

Also, i'd recommend getting a component cable for PS2, and force games to run at 480p with an utility like the GS Mode Selector.

Just get a CRT. The majority (like 90%) of the PS2's library is in 480i (interlaced).
Interlaced content looks like total garbage on a flat panel. Scalers that make it look okay like RetroTINK 5 are also all south of 300 dollars compared to CRTs which you can still get for free if you look in the right places.

This is a pretty basic list that you probably would find in any article talking about the best PS2 games. However I can say that I've played them all and do actually like them. There's a lot of games on the system so there's no way you won't be able to find something you like.

I recommend the Xenosaga trilogy. They are turn based and have some pretty interesting lore. Plus the games reinvent the combat system with each game so it never gets stale.

I'm not a RPG guy, so can't give you recommendations there.

For non-turn based. Balders Gate Dark Alliance is a quality hack n slash.

However, I'd pass on most of Anon88s lost since a lot of them are either better elsewhere (Resident Evil 4) or are niche cult classic/"hidden gems" (Rule of Rose). If you're emulating. Skip Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 since they depend on pressure sensitive buttons.

If you're completely new to Playstation 2. I'm going to recommend the basic bitch popular stuff even if they're far from my favourites. (* for stuff that has marginally better versions elsewhere)

And I could keep going, but the point is the PS2 had a vast library of games, many of which became classics or franchises that run to this day like Hitman. That's before we get into more niche games like Urban Chaos Riot Responce or Freedom Fighters, or games forgotten games that were popular at the time like Tony Hawks Under Ground (THUG), Smackdown, or any of the EA Sports Big games.

It was also a time before game journalism went to shit, so you can generally look up any "Top games of the PS2" list, and jump on anything that looks interesting. Or even go by release date. Early PS2 games were quite primitive, but they improved fairly fast.

Now you have MMC2(Punchout), MMC6 (both Star Tropics), but better yet heavy Japanese mapper support from the VRC2-4(Gradius 2, Parodius stuff) up to the heavy VRC6 (Castlevania 3-JP) ...yes, finally a multicart not only with Castlevania III but it's the JAPANESE one with the uncensored visuals and superior audio PLUS it is english patched so you get the game as it was always intended to be. This cart can handle the high added audio and memory needs of more costly Famicom memory mappers companies did on their own.

That's the big news imo. My fancy-pants flashcart can't do that.

I figured any multi that's supposed to have 1000+ is bound to be clogged up with lame hacks and dupes, especially if they're not advertising what games are on it. The one in the link only has a couple hundred, not bad picks either. Lack of Splatterhouse and Sweet Home is a bit of a yikes, though. I wonder if any of these multis have the guts to pirate some newer homebrew or commercial indie games.

There are so many PS2 JRPGs that I barely even covered, it really is something that you'll seemingly never run out of. I'm still working my way through the PS1/PS2's JRPG catalog and I dont think I'll finish any time soon.

Yeah, that is rather odd. Considering he prolly has thousands of dollars of retro vidya and video equipment in there, it really doesnt make sense that nothing would be stolen. The overburdened shelf definitely makes more sense.
