the whole "series" is NBA Jam, NBA Jam: TE, and some PS3(?)-era reboot I know nothing about. afaik TE is a straight upgrade of the original. The SNES/Genesis ports are perfectly fine, but arcade is gonna look/sound a bit better. Don't forget to google how to get the secret characters.
I'd say one of the mame/arcade version. But you'd probably need to config your button layout so you can hold run while pressing shoot and pass. The SNES version is good and easy to jump into but is a big step down in audio and graphics.

I hear the Saturn version is pretty good in terms of audio and graphics. Never played it though.

I downloaded it and played it for 2 minutes before turning off, I hate niggerball dunno what I was expecting. Thought I was gonna be playing some hidden masterpiece :story:

It and NFL Blitz are essentially just sports games but with magic. If you want a sports game that is fun even if you couldn't care less about the sport, just play a Mario one.

Batocera 43 is currently in development and aside from the usual emulator updates, it has some features I’ve really wanted for a while. You’ll be able to edit hotkeys within the main menu instead of digging through the options of each individual emulator (for you anti-RetroArch autists, that means you won’t have to deal with RetroArch overrides for hotkeys). There’s also a customizable control center that can be opened mid-game for stuff like reading a game’s manual or force-quitting the emulator, better WINE management, better arcade stick management for multiple players, and Zaparoo support for loading games from NFC.

Best of all, it’ll support the Thor and dual screen, so I can throw Android in the FUCKING TRASH where it belongs.

Try playing it IRL with non-nigger friends sometime. That's what I did in high school and it was enjoyable.
I was actually good at basketball at school on account of my height, no niggers in the country back then, was great.

I used to love NHL Hitz, the hockey one, used to play that all the time back in the day. I'm sure there's romhacks that update the kits to more current ones

The NES has a couple great quasi-sports games: Base Wars (baseball) and Super Spike V-Ball (volleyball). Both are are a decent play if the NBA Jam style appeals.

I took a quick glance at the list and it doesn't look interesting. Elroy Hits The Pavement? What? I've been playing and reading about PC games for three decades and I don't know half of those...
I am familiar with that game, I never had it but it was a sequel to Elroy Goes Bugzerk, an edutainment game that was basically a few puzzles and a maze wrapped with what was in essence an animated movie.

The demo I had growing up was just the maze portion.

You don't even have to go to Mario for that

In soccer, all you do is beat the shit out of characters with your specials.

The SNES version has the shot release timing totally fucked. The Genesis version was arcade-accurate for controls.

NHL Rock the Rink is the best crazy hockey game, complete with ridiculous commentary by actual pro broadcasters. "They didn't hit like THAT on The Brady Bunch!"

It was more of a novelty at the time it came out than it is today. "Hey, check out this basketball game where you can do these elaborate dunks and the net catches on fire."

I took a look at two projects that translate games through local AI OCR.
https://github.com/bquenin/interpreter
Most of the translations seem at least understandable. This is using a 1GB "sugoi-v4-ja-en-ctranslate2" model which is a year old.
Hopefully in the future the project will allow using newer, more advanced models.

This led me to find "RetroArch-LmStudio-Adapter"
retroarch_AI.jpg
As the name suggest, connects a local LMStudio server with Retroarch's built-in Accessibility settings.
Translation is requested with a hotkey and displayed as an overlay on screen while the game is paused.
Setup is very DIY and results weren't noticeably better. I think this is because it is uses a more generalized model "Gemma-3-4B-QAT-IT", which isn't trained on Japanese pixel fonts, to perform the OCR and translation. The other project uses a second model specifically for pixel font OCR.

I had some time to mess around with the Analouge 3d over Christmas. Played a bunch of Mario Kart, Mario Kart Amped Up, Smash Remix, Magical Tetris Challenge and Majora's Mask. Hacks were played on a Summercart 64. Everything else was original carts. I can't tell the difference between it and an authentic N64 when I'm playing, and I've played a lot of N64 over the years.

I hooked up my original N64 to the same TV using a Retroscaler 2x from Aliexpress to compare. There absolutely are tiny differences when you put them side by side... a brighter red or blue here or a race timer running a fraction of a second faster there, but I'd be extremely skeptical of anyone calming their MFA in film studies allows them to see the difference without putting both consoles directly side by side.

I played through story mode in Magical Tetris Challenge to test input lag and I couldn't perceive any. No issues doing things like wedging blocks into tight spaces at the last possible moment. Now again, if you recorded the Analouge 3D and N64 side by side, record video and step through frame by frame it's totally possible the 3D adds a frame or two of input lag over an actual N64. However, I'd be extremely skeptical of anyone who says they can perceive it with their naked eye.

Youtube videos do not do the CRT filters justice. They are beautiful.

I tried my Space Station Silicon Valley cart because I heard it doesn't work, and it does crash at the at the DMA logo screen if you don't skip it. If you start a new game it crashes when the dog gets killed in the opening cutscene. That game has always been buggy even on original hardware with the expansion pak, so my guess would be there's something buggy happening with the ram.

Overall I'd say it is to N64 as something like the SupaRetroN HD is to the SNES. Not a 100% perfect clone, but close enough that you won't notice without putting them side by side. However, a RetroN clone is ~$100, and while the build quality is higher overall, I do think the 3D is expensive for what it is. I only bought one because I'm really into N64 and have dozens of original carts I've collected since the 90s. If you don't have a bunch of carts lying around you want to use, I struggle to come up with a reason to buy one over something like one of those cheapish Mister Clones on Aliexpress outside of how aesthetically pleasing the Analouge 3D itself is.

Wccftech: RPCS3 Rolls Out Windows ARM64 Builds, Expanding The Compatibility Of The Emulator Even Further
The RPCS3 developers are doing a great job these days, and perhaps this is the biggest update we have seen from the devs in a while. A few days ago, RPCS3 enabled direct ISO mounting of PS3 disc games, which made mounting games pretty convenient. Today, it announced that it has rolled out native Windows ARM64 builds for the emulator, which is now available to download from the website.

something like the SupaRetroN HD
I'm just going to quote myself here for a second. What's up with everyone on Reddit saying this console emulates games and shitting all over it? It's not emulation, it uses after market chips to try and reproduce the original consoles and it performs fairly well.

I found an interesting video on Youtube comparing the RetroN 3 HD to a few FPGA consoles:

The NES on the RetroN fairs fairly badly with NES. This is to be expected because many of the clone chips have a reversed pulse wave duty cycle when compared the the NES's original CPU, which causes the sound to be all fucked up. However, this is absolutely an acceptable, lag free way to play SNES and Genesis on a modern TV. The video and sound quality aren't as crisp as they are with the FPGA consoles, but is still generally on par with how these games looked on most CRTs in the 90s. It costs $100 and comes with an SNES and Genesis controller. Get a couple cheap flash carts on Ali Express, and you have a complete setup that lets you play SNES and Genesis in a fairly authentic manner for under $200.

Has anyone here bought the AYN Thor? I'm considering getting one and they just announced a small price increase.

I did, and it’s great as long as you can stomach Android. And even if you can’t, the Batocera devs are currently working on porting it over, so I’m hoping they focus on speed and user-friendliness to rival Android’s sleep mode.
How is the input delay? Most reviews say its kinda bad and I've found android to have bad delay in general

I haven’t noticed any issues, but I’m also not extremely sensitive to it like some people are. I use 120hz mode almost all the time since it supposedly reduces it.
Thanks for the input. My 3DS has been having issues with games corrupting, so I figured it was time for me to take the plunge and it seems like the Thor is the best in the biz
