Physical edition of Scott Pilgrim vs the World: The Game sold 25k copies in 3 hours and may even be more than double that amount now.


That's a record breaking preoder number for limited run who usually only does 5k runs at most with many games averaging between 1-2k sold.

The new port is good, my only gripe is the game has online trophies and achievements so not all content can be done offline.
 
Figured this was the best thread to ask this in since I have very little experience with emulators.

I really want to play Dragon Quest IV, but the game is outrageously expensive, both on NES and on DS. I don't normally emulate games because I like the experience of having the game in my hand plus I have the hardware to play the game. However, I don't have the money to buy a $150 game right now so I figured I could emulate DQ IV on NES (I don't really think emulating the DS is gonna get me the full experience).

What's surprising though is that I'm having trouble finding a decent NES emulator. I easily found good ones for the GBA and the SNES, but I tried two for NES and both of them couldn't do what I wanted them to. The first one was FCEUX, which had a completely fucked aspect ratio. You could get the game to run in 4:3, but unlike every other emulator which represents the aspect ratio with black bars, FCEUX does this thing where the borders of the screen are the primary color of the screen at the time. I hate it. It's hideous, and you can't fix it. Digging around online indicated that's just how FCEUX works. Then I tried Nintendulator, but I couldn't get the fucking thing to recognize my controller's inputs. It would either spit out a random button number from 1-9 or it would give me X rotation, which basically means it didn't work. And I couldn't figure out how to fix the aspect ratio from the menu (it's probably buried somewhere but that controller's a major barrier).

The long and short of it is, are there any decent NES emulators that work normally? I know I'm decades late in asking this but it's shockingly hard to find, unlike with the SNES and GBA.

Mesen is my go to emulator for accuracy and features, but it has slower performance than something like Nestopia. It features lots of video features including aspect ratio/overscan: https://www.mesen.ca/docs/configuration/video.html

Please note in order to get a 4:3 resolution the emulator needs to stretch the pixels horizontally, on a real life CRT portions of the screen will not be shown, for more details see: https://wiki.nesdev.com/w/index.php/Overscan

Fun fact, there's no canonical "true" color palette for the NES. It's a matter of interpreting the NTSC (Never The Same Color) signal. My ps2 tends to lag alot when playing on a 4k tv is there

Buy a DS or 3DS and pirate it, it's unhelpful advice but in the future you might want to play other expensive games.

Your tv upscales the signal/image and that takes time. Try setting your PS2 to different output resolutions and see if your tv likes one better than the other.
A framemeister or something similar is supposedly really good but also very expensive.

something something about screen tech and response times and refresh rate and input lag
have you tried to set your tv to game mode? I believe Samsung has that option on their remotes

No i have a bravia tv also it's on game mode and it still has lag @Smaug's Smokey Hole said it has something to do with upscaling

Buy the 852-in-1 NES multicart or hack a 3DS and install Twilight Menu.

There are lots of helpful answers already, but I'd like to throw in RetroArch as an option (I use the mesen core). It might take some getting used to, but it is a really convenient solution for just about any 2d console. The thing about RA is people seem to have vastly different experiences based on minute differences in their hardware setup. This is why you'll see some testimonies praising it and others hating it.

Plus it has integration for RetroAchievements, if you're into that.

Very easy. Just read the guide and pay attention to the version numbers when installing the FBI software. You might want to get CIA in there as well. That's just what they're called.

Everdrive looks pretty nice. A bit expensive, but not too far out there when you consider the price of cart dumpers and other specialized accessories.

Not to mention games themselves. I tell my friends and coworker to just get an everdrive if they want to get games for there systems as they are too pricey anymore for people to start collecting.
