In Barb’s defense, it kinda makes sense in a total “screw my autistic son/only heir” kinda way.
Yes, reverse mortgages are usually pure idiocy. (Regular debt can be discharged in a bankruptcy. Reverse mortgages can’t.)
Barb basically traded the house and Chris’s future for piece of mind and a higher standard of living for herself in the last years of her life.
It was not a school for retards. Chris is autistic not retarded. It was the Grafton School in Winchester, VA. Chris is not low functioning despite what anyone may think. Low functioning autism is someone on the autism spectrum with an IQ of 69 or lower (i.e. an intellectual disability). Chris isn't stupid, he's extremely maladjusted. And yes, his father was responsible (in a manner of speaking). Chris never applied for disability, it was his father that set up the process for him, and then took his cut for "room and board" out of the monthly check. Chris was kind of a "cash cow" insofar as the Lumberjack was concerned.Oh, I recognize the pattern. I feel absolutely no sympathy for Chris and feel he deserves everything that's coming to him for actively rejecting any help or working towards improving himself in any way. I can recognize that Barb completely fucked Chris over because she's a selfish whore without siding with Chris or feeling bad for him.
And no one suggested to Bob and Barb that Chris be committed when he was younger. The faculty at Chris' elementary told the Chandlers that Chris was beyond their scope of ability and expertise to continue to teach and manage, and said he needs to go to a dedicated school for retards where the faculty has training and experience to manage someone as low-functioning as Chris. The Chandlers, being old enough to be Chris' grandparents and having grown up when actual mental asylums were still a thing (and back when families would often dump their developmentally challenged children and forget they exist) mistakenly believed that the Greene County School District wanted to commit Chris because they didn't understand what they were being told.
What does he need?Nobody on this forum even comes close to having the type of expertise needed to help him.
No, he's maladjusted and stupid. Claiming that he's normal outside of his autism is actually very stupid. Around 50-70% of people with ASD have learning disabilities, which means that more than likely he's retarded. It was not a school for retards. Chris is autistic not retarded. At what point, precisely, would it would have been possible to teach chris how to write a resume/network/interview for a job? All of those things take a level of social competence well beyond anything our "high-functioning" hero has ever demonstrated in his life. What the heck would you expect? His father did not provide any kind of a role model on how to budget his money, write a resume, help him network to get some kind of full time job, seek counseling to learn how to interact wtih members of the opposite sex, seek out some kind of support group for people on the spectrum, and so forth and so on.
More info on that?Well... He did come to Null and ask him to kill someone, so...
A reverse mortgage would probably be recorded with Greene County and registered in the Deed book. Because VA is a Race-Notice state, a lender would record asap to avoid getting fucked.Well, it’s Null’s retelling a piece of information he got from Chris reading his moms mail apparently.
So yeah, I agree that the room for error is very big here.
What makes it believable for me is the apparent end of the financhu crisis. There has been no begging for awhile, Chris is laying low on his usual lazy attempts at hustle dollars out of weens. And clearly he has enough money to piss away on multiple $300 Lego sets.
So clearly SOMETHING has happened. And a reverse mortgage makes the most sense.
He's flirted with overuse of alcohol in the past and he's tried drugs (at least the wacky tobacky), but ultimately the autismoverse roleplay is a stronger and more addictive drug to him. This makes me wonder how Chris would fare if he starts becoming either an drug addict or an alcoholic.

Fast forward to 2020, you have an almost middle aged man who is probably sufferes from schizoaffective disorder, is living on borrowed time as far as his finances are concerned. And no Chris is not transgendered. This whole thing started with this maladjusted tomgirl saga after "Jackie" told him he needed to have more empathy for the opposite sex. And yes, I totally agree with the analogy of comparing an imploded star to Chris. All Null is going to end up doing is banging his head against a brick wall. Nobody on this forum even comes close to having the type of expertise needed to help him.

You have to understand that in some parts of the country around the time Chris was a small child, lobotomies were still being carried out. Chris was prone to severe temper tantrums and was evidently barely mid-functioning if he was mute. Bob was paranoid and I honestly don’t blame him given his own perception of what special schools were due to the attitudes of his era.It was not a school for retards. Chris is autistic not retarded. Also Bob did in fact try to square away some time at home to teach Chris basic skills but they were always intercepted by Barb. She actually told her husband to shut up because he was being too loud trying to gasp educate their son.

I’m a little confused regarding the timeline where Chris loses his Wendy’s gig, attends and gets expelled from PVCC, and actually gets the SSDI. Not sure if it’s accurately documented anywhere, but did Chris get his tugboat after being kicked out of college for a year, or after the Wendy’s debacle? I mean, Chris still needed gas to drive to school, and clearly he had money to spend on shit at The Game Place (he’s also been going there since he was 17).I don’t know anyone above 18 who lives at home and has a job or a source of income, who aren’t expected to contribute in a similar way that Bob expected Chris to contribute.
Bob wasn’t taking advantage of his manchild son, he was trying to teach him that nothing is free and grownups have bills and responsibilities. Imagine if Chris had gotten used to having free rein over his 800$ tugboat to spend as he pleased, before Bob passed away.

Well, apparently at least some of Bob’s lessons stuck. I’m talking about the reports about Chris being able (at least in the past) to make a simple budget, pay the basic bills, and stick to said budget.
The problem is when Barb comes along and either “borrows” money from Chris, or spends some of his money on crap, which apparently has happened.
There is a reason why Bob chose Chris to be in charge of the finances after his death.
That’s not treating your son as a “cash cow”, that’s treating him as an adult with an independent source of income.

Completely agree on that point.
Chris grew up in the 1980s, well after lobotomy had gone out of favor in the mental health sector. In the 1950s and 1960s medications to help stabilize and regulate brain chemistry were on the market and proving very effective at treating a wide range of mental illnesses and personality/developmental disorders, so lobotomy had become obsolete aside from VERY rare exceptions. Deinstitutionalization had begun in the 1970s since these medications allowed more and more patients who would have been kept in an asylum ten or twenty years before to live mostly normal, productive lives (and the horrible conditions in these hospitals had come to public awareness), and by the time Chris was in school most mental asylums had been shuttered. They wouldn't have lobotomized Chris. That's just stupid. They wanted him to be in a specialized school that could actually work with him and even teach him, along with making sure he was seeing a specialist in childhood Autism and taking medications that would have helped him be a lot closer to normal than he was.
Exactly right. Bob was the only one who actually tried to set Chris up for success for his adulthood as much as realistically possible and teach Chris how to behave in polite society. He was the only one who tried to enforce healthy boundaries and get Chris to be responsible. The big reason Bob took Chris' money was because Chris had wracked up a shit ton of credit card debt both on Chris' credit and Bob and Barb's, so Bob told Chris that he would pay Bob a portion of his TardBux every month to pay off the debt.
More info on that?
Yeah, but it's pretty funny that his propensity to get into money troubles outweighs his "check balancing skill". It's like teaching a crackhead about the dangers of crack. They don't care nor do they have the capacity to care, all they want is crack. The same thing goes for Chris, all he wants is that quick reward to buy toys. If he does keep the lights on, it's only so he can look at his junk, not so he can live and enjoy life.Well, apparently at least some of Bob’s lessons stuck.
