Just to throw in to the mix the "Autism Papers" were from a time when Chris was attending school and, most importantly, he had yet to become the internet's court jester and have his mind, feelings and thoughts destabilized.
So, I think if you tested Chris back then, pre-ED and becoming too thirsty for sex which contributed to his issues, he would, when compared to many of the idiots in the world, be considered a fairly advanced re.tard at least in my book. He could drive, attend school and dress himself. He could learn and design things and made those autism tutorial videos etc. He wasn't ever going to become a professor or engineer, of course not. But he has some intelligence, but autism messing his head up and being a lazy dude, of course it appears that he is a brainless idiot, which he also is in many ways.
But Chris now, with his mind so warped, whatever intelligence that he had that could have been channeled, with the right assistance and guidance from his parents, or counselors or therapists or whatever, is long gone. This is a now nearing 40 year old man who has severe mental issues and needs professional help, in any capacity. With all the things he has done over the years, his delusions about the merge are quite pronounced and he is highly susceptible to influence, and with Chris' stature and history, that influence that will be exerted on him will be most likely negative or harmful in some form. The people who would try and help him in a beneficial way, such as Null attempted to do, just cant put the required effort in, or have the necessary skills or sanity, to do it because you are dealing with someone who is mentally unbalanced and delusional, more so with each passing year it seems to me.
I think Chris, with the proper parentage and help from the educational system when he became of school age, could have become a somewhat productive member of society. He should have not been schooled in the mainstream but with other speds and slow in the heads. He could have been molded and developed much better I believe. I am sure Chris could have gotten a job a few notches above the I Sort Glass dude. I mean, he could be a flower delivery person as an example. Him being able to drive also adds to the employment options or choices he could have had.
tl;dr-Chris' delusions override any intelligence he has.
