Guitar Hero 2 was the last great Guitar Hero.

I have to disagree— world tour and 5 are pretty fun and most hardcore fans site GH Metallica as the best game.
I have to agree with critiques towards the charting in 3 though sometimes the overcharting gets ridiculous. Guess that’s what happens when you hire fans to help work on them.

I guess I should also say that the Rhythm Heaven games are still absolutely fuckin GOATed even after all these years and I hope there will be a new entry coming to switch someday. :optimistic:
The OG GameBoy Advance one has a translated version called Rhyth Heaven Silver

It's breddy gud. Sad that it never got an official US release, but this works.

Oh good, I can sperg about the DDR series and how it turned into a festering pile of shit over the years.
In the meantime, while I get that prepared, here's some useful links

Dance Dance Revolution:
Current Arcade Version: DDR A3
Current Home Version: DDR Grand Prix (need to register TWO accounts to use it for the game) PC Download on their site (it's in moonspeak)

You think DDR is runnig down the gutter? Boy, don't even get me started on Pump It Up. From a solid alternative to ddr to a complete shitty counterpart to In The Groove.

Project Outfox sucks just stick to stepmania.

There was another general rhythm game thread but seemed to never gain any traction. Hopefully this one will fare better.

An update from my last post there:

A few months ago, the top US DDR player Chris4Life was called out by a top JP player using an illegal VPNed-to-Indonesia private machine (Konami doesn't sell cabs to private owners) to get WRs.

There are basically 6 "types" of region machines that can run the newest version of DDR.

- Japan cabs
- Japan-exclusive gold cabs
- US cabs
- Korea cabs
- SEA (Southeast Asia) cabs
- Hawaii cabs

There are three types of "world record" scores that are saved to Konami's online network, e-amusement.

- World record
- Area/Regional record
- Single machine record

The newest version of DDR, DDR A3, was released for Gold cabs in March of this year, followed by everyone else in June.

Well, almost everyone. Except for US cabs. As of this posting, for reasons unknown to anyone but Konami, they are still stuck on the previous version A20+. This is because US cabs, mainly found in Dave and Busters and Round1, run a special type of software that in the past has required a special USB dongle to upgrade. For some reason, even though every other machine in the world has been on A3 for months, these US cabs have such a special software (or Konami is being that super incompetent) that the update for these machines is "still being worked on"

However, there are gold cabs that can be played at some US Round1s**Yes, there are Round1s that are now running two different versions of DDR, but once you move your data from A20+ to A3 any future high scores in A20+ don't get passed to A3 and vice versa. So majority of US players are still sticking to the older version., it's just that its region is hardcoded to Osaka. So anytime you set a new area record, it is filed as being set in the Osaka area.

The top JP player that caught Chris plays in Osaka.

He noticed that Chris was getting all of these world records on A3 songs. However, if Chris was playing legitimately in America, he should've been only been able to get them on a gold cab (he doesn't live in Hawaii), so his record should show up as both a world record and an area record. Yet, the record was only showing up as a world record. Kinda sus.

Then some SEA players who actually live in SEA were like "yeah, he doesn't live in Indonesia, which kinda sucks because he's taking all the 'regional' SEA scores for himself even though he doesn't actually live here"

It's been a known secret that Chris has been doing this for a long time, even going so far to fake arcade ambient noise on his videos to hide the fact to what he's doing is illegal. But no one dare wants to say anything publicly because he's the "GOAT" and literally worshipped in the community as a god. Funny thing is, he could've avoided all of this by simply not playing the newest version on the illegal home cab or only playing on the gold cabs, but he let the egoism of being the best in the world get to his head and ended up self-outing himself. :story:

Instead of fessing up, he basically told the JP player to keep quiet...

View attachment 3727842

RTed some passive aggressive "wahhh konami hates private cab users"

View attachment 3727843
and has since stopped posting any pics/videos from said cab. No legal action or anything like that has seemed to come from Konami.

---

There has also been some long-ass Twitlongers/google docs lately on some players being physical abusers to women lately, but idk any of these people to begin with to really post about in detail, and after a while it basically boils down to holy fuck stop putting your dick (or pussy) in crazy.

A tl;dr of one of them (stolen from /jp/):

There's a similarity between Chris and Sonicfox that stands out to me. Not that they're insufferable or use their fetishes and pronouns to fit in their respective circles (from what I can tell Chris never does any of these things). But the reason why they are in the top spots of their respective games is because barely anyone plays them.

The fact zoomers don't appreciate step-rhythm games makes me sad.
I miss the days when people would get creative and even make their own freestyle choreography in doubles. Pump it up was especially remembered for this. Now, every retard just slides their feet around the pad while grabbing the bar because they are so fat or weak they can't even support their own weight.

@Danone

What happened after PIU Pro?

Stopped organizing the World Pump Festivals. Removed more than half of the original songs for their twentieth anniversary versions (Pump It Up XX). Put way more generic and outdated Kpop instead of the experimental one they have included for years, The freestyling scene died. The only tournaments that are organized are being done on Colombia or some other Latin America shithole; the song list is swarming with weeaboo bullshit and Tohou, the communities range from non-existent to full of coomers, etc.

Never forget:

She changed the world.
Good old Elite beat agents/Osu

The last stage still moves me to tears.

The part where the agents get stoned by aliens always stood out as better then how ash got stoned in that pokemon movie.

It's just awesome to see all the people you helped coming together to help the agents. :semperfidelis: :feels:
Edit: Speaking of elite beat agents. How about the time THEY DO A FANTASTIC VOYAGE TO DANCE AND INSPIRE WHITE BLOOD CELLS THAT LOOK LIKE A NURSE.
NOT MAKING THIS UP THEY DO THIS.

Edit Edit: Or how bout the time they dance to help a baseball player beat a fire spewing rock monster and save kids.

I wish I was making this shit up, god Elite beat agents is so wild I wish we got a second one.

I was never really into Pump it Up, but I appreciated how it managed to stay distinct from DDR. I remember one old version had, like, actual uncensored hiphop. And now the recent ones all seem to have the same songs from the same artists as like, every other non-Konami music game. I've thought about writing a thread about that, but couldn't get my thoughts in order enough to make sense - like about how so many music games are just carbon copies of one another now, down to the specific kinds of music you always hear from them. Musynx, DJ Max, Cytus, Voez, Pump it Up, Muse Dash, they're all so similar in their songlists. And all the Touhou nowadays, even Konami's games are full of that. They're fine, but they're all kind of samey, and yet another reminder that we're decades past the days of Dancemania licenses.

To be fair, A Different Drum was an acceptable "western" replacement when they were being used for the Ultramix games. They had a lot of good underground shit I've never heard of before and some of those artists wound up doing remixes of Konami Originals which wound up sounding nice.

But yea, Dancemania was still king. A lot of those songs had actual personality to them.

Also lost their entire server data last year with everyone's high scores. (with all their backups also being unrecoverable kek)

Well, that's partially because it's super hard to get into if you aren't within close distance of a Round1 or D&B (or some arcades in Hawaii) and buying old cabs or metal pads that closely resemble arcade ones cost a fortune unless you know the right people. Plus finding the space to store it and all. Chris was extremely privileged to have frequent access to ITG cabs (before the DDR A revival), Round1s, and the illegal private cab so he could essentially grind all the time. FEFEMZ is the only other person that can beat him, and IIRC even he doesn't play DDR that often because there's even fewer official cabs in Korea. (Not that he has any trouble transitioning between Pump and DDR)

A lot of them are BMS contest songs or commissions from BMS artists that most players are familiar with so it's probably quicker and cheaper, plus EDM wub wubs is the rad new genre. Likewise, Touhou licenses are probably way cheaper than dealing with expensive anime/J-Pop licenses or the complexity of foreign licenses now that Toshiba EMI no longer exists.

EBA is just so light-hearted and fun you can't help but find it endearing. I definitely think the world needs more games like it.
It also helps the songs they pick for levels are great.

I don't even listen to Madonna, and only know her because she showed up in the simpsons, but god damn is

A good and catchy song. I am happy EBA showed me it.

Iamchris4life being a little shit doesn't surprise me at all. The Bemani community's got plenty of terrible people of all kinds, from niggers to nonses, but it's small and tight-knit enough to where I figure nobody really discusses it because said N&Ns would know exactly who's spilling the beans.

So, here's a screenshot of Bemaniso forums celebrity Aubrey outright admitting to grooming and statutory raping a 13-year-old girl, and also a 14-year-old girl, among other things:

Frankly you can be like me and go on Twitter with a "pretend to be part of the community by occasionally like/posting/RTing related shit" lurker account (obviously follow good OpSec, keep separate identities from here, don't reveal too much, etc.) and try to slowly follow as much famous people or people that show up in your recommendations as you can while keeping a low profile. Like any other community spats on Twitter, people simply love blasting or sharing drama or #MeToo stuff publicly at times so it just naturally shows up in your timeline without having to do anything. (examples here: https://archive.ph/fBy4o and https://archive.ph/ImSvP - I've never interacted with any of them personally) Pretty sure that's how I learned about the Jeff Floyd/Fungah and Little Matt #MeToo stuff. Downside is it is a lot harder to know the specific details for the same reasons you mentioned unless you closely interact with these people or someone else spills the beans; a lot of them travel to or participate in tournaments at cons or gaming events or locally, which I don't do. Sometimes people will private their public account out of nowhere or keep personal stuff behind a separate private profile which you may or not get lucky getting access to since you're some random nobody. Like I was totally unaware of anything that came out of sows in the past just cause I never really "knew" anyone in the community to get in.

80's (and to an extent 90's) Madonna had good shit.

Holiday
Like A Prayer
Dress You Up
Spanish Lullaby
Vogue
Express Yourself

She didn't start sucking until she started releasing shit like Ray of Light

I listen to an ungodly amount of music, so being drawn to rythm games was a given. It's the only genre I play with any consistency. I'll give any game a go, but my primary ones of choice are Beat Saber and Rock Band (Guitar/Vocals).

Beat Saber recently added a new track pack that makes me hate the developers... Fucking Lizzo. That fat, disgusting, avatar of obesity who cry's about being called a "fat gross whore", yet all her music is about being a "fat gross whore". That was probably the most miserable time I've had in a rhythm game. It's not a great experience being genuinely nauseated while you're flailing around like a spastic playing Fruit Ninja.

As for DLC for Rock Band... I know they release new music every few months in Rock Band 4, but I'm not paying for that shit, especially when they charge again for all the songs I already own by default in RB 1,2,3,Lego, and all the physical track packs. Not to mention there's like 2500 tracks of DLC, at $2-$3 a pop. I'm not paying $5000 - $6000 for all that. That's why I got a modded PS3, specifically for Rock Band. 1700 tracks, and I only paid $200 total for the system and USB stick.

EBA is just so light-hearted and fun you can't help but find it endearing. I definitely think the world needs more games like it.
God I need to pick that one up again. Genuinely fun version of OSU! and the tracklist sells it so damn well.

Speaking of

Does FEFEMZ have any sort of job? or life for that matter? The last thing I was aware about him was that the only thing he did was play Pump his whole life.

Fun fact about FEFEMZ's "fans" in gud ol Latin America:

Those were the most idiotic...? I've ever met. They even made stories up about how they "knew" them and would "pass the torch" to them. It was so stupid because FEFEMZ never even stepped on Mexican soil in his life by then. Not to mention, to this day, they have this cult like fanaticism towards him in Pump it Up Facebook groups (third world countries social media of preference).

I used to play a lot of DDR back when I was going to school but gradually most of the arcades got rid of their DDR machines (presumably because they're a pain in the ass to maintain when idiots stomp on them all day). When I was in Japan I picked up Project Diva Arcade and Sound Voltex but haven't been able to play either since I came back. I still have my cards in case I stumble upon a machine again.

These days my main rhythm games are DJMAX and Muse Dash, both on Steam since I don't think there's any Bemani stuff anywhere near where I live at this point. Muse Dash gets a trickle of new songs every couple months which is nice but DJMAX charges way too goddamn much for DLC packs so I only have the base game still.

That said, does anyone know anything good as far as mobile goes? For straight rhythm games without too much gacha or other bullshit I've found VOEZ, Cytus II, and Arcaea to be decent enough.

Based on this Korean wiki article (Google Translated) it sounds like he's still enrolled in college, but I'm not fully positive. He did temporarily step away for mandatory military service a few years ago, but he got discharged early last year because of the pandemic.

One of the newer A3 songs is a banger. Great chart too, pretty easy for a 14:

They're not too bad to work on. Dummies spill drinks on the pads and it gets all in the arrows, but those can be removed and clean, and they're built in a way so that pouring a soda directly on them won't come close to any of the electronics inside. Sensors get worn out over time, but any arcade should have at least a dozen replacements ready to go. DDRs are just not so desirable if they don't get played much because they're gigantic, loud, and a huge pain in the ass to move around, even by arcade standards.

I think a lot of the old machines are either rotting in warehouses, or were scooped up by private owners.
