A leading white nationalist told a judge on Thursday that his notoriety has made it difficult for him to raise money for his defense against a “financially crippling” lawsuit that names him as an organizer of a rally in Virginia that erupted into violence in 2017.

Richard Spencer’s attorney has asked for the court’s permission to withdraw from representing him in the civil case. The lawyer, John DiNucci, said Spencer owes him a significant amount of money in legal fees and hasn’t been cooperating adequately.

Spencer told U.S. Magistrate Judge Joel Hoppe that the lawsuit over the “Unite the Right” white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, in August 2017 has been “extremely expensive” and a “huge burden” for him.

“This case has been financially crippling for a long time,” said Spencer, who popularized the term “alt-right” to describe a loosely connected fringe movement of white supremacists, neo-Nazis and other far-right extremists.

Lawyers for victims of the Charlottesville rally violence sued several far-right extremist groups and individuals who participated in the event, which was organized in part to protest the city’s planned removal of a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. The lawsuit names Spencer as one of the organizers of the Aug. 12, 2017, rally. Spencer was scheduled to speak at the gathering but has denied that he helped organize it.

Spencer said getting banned from mainstream internet platforms has made it difficult for him raise and accept donations from supporters.

“That’s something that I have proven to be able to do in the past, fairly easily to be honest, but it’s something that I cannot do now,” he said. “When I attempt to raise money, there are various groups that make it their life’s mission to get me kicked off the platform.”

Violent street clashes broke out in Charlottesville on Aug 12, 2017, before a man fascinated with Adolf Hitler plowed his car into a crowd of counterprotesters, killing a woman. On the eve of the rally, Spencer and others marched through the University of Virginia’s campus, shouting racist and anti-Semitic slogans.

Spencer has operated an Alexandria, Virginia-based nonprofit called the National Policy Institute, which raised $442,482 in tax-deductible contributions from 2007 through 2012, according to an Associated Press review of IRS tax records. William H. Regnery II, a wealthy publisher, founded the nonprofit in 2005.

The lawsuit, backed by civil rights group Integrity First for America, seeks unspecified damages and a judgment that the defendants violated the plaintiffs’ constitutional rights. It is one of several suits filed on behalf of victims of the violence in Charlottesville.

DiNucci said Spencer owes him a “very substantial amount” of money. He said couldn’t present an adequate defense without more cooperation from Spencer.

“I don’t see a way forward,” he said. “I haven’t heard any indication, today or otherwise, that there is some other means by which money will be provided.”

Spencer said he wants to keep DiNucci as a lawyer and will try to raise the money needed to pay him.

The magistrate judge didn’t immediately rule on DiNucci’s request to withdraw from the case. Hoppe gave Spencer one week to demonstrate that he can raise money.

Spencer said it would be “catastrophic” if he is forced to defend himself without a lawyer. Other defendants in the case have opted to defend themselves.

“I would be out of my league, your honor,” Spencer said. “It’s not a question of intelligence. It’s a question of competency.”

Plaintiffs’ attorney Michael Bloch said Spencer has failed to turn over thousands of photos and video files in preparation for the trial scheduled to start on Oct. 26.

I know I'm supposed to find this amusing but considering negros and gay communists are literally burning cities down and lynching people and endorsing open violence against the state, I can't help but see this as a kangaroo court and recent events will actually make it harder to defend him.
Basically everything that rally was supposed to be about.

IIRC it's obscured through the SPLC but there are some major financial backers. Striker did an article about them a while back, but I forget if it was on National Justice or another rw publication.

I love laughing at Spencer's often homoerotic foibles as much as anyone else, but in light of all the recent race war, anti-civilization, common decency destroying and society-undermining actions by the radical left mobs, their black footsoldiers, their brainlet and evil governmental supporters and media cheerleaders, all I gotta say is Fuck all this bullshit about the "violent and hateful altright and nazis" still being dragged through the mud over Charlottesville. If anything, anyone that was a participant in the Unite the Right rally would be able to sue and ruin the government, police, and antifa members who set them up for a violence filled catastrophe, if we lived in a country that didn't have all it's institutions and core values undermined and corrupted.
James Fields got life for what was at most vehicular homicide, with no proof he had intentions of wanting to hurt anyone, while that rebellious, connected-family, rich girl antifa hoe got basically no punishment, or extensive mainstream media coverage/outrage, for trying to light policemen on fire/kill them, by throwing a Molotov Cocktail in their vehicle, for Christ's sake! Spencer has stated that his explicit end-goal is race war. If you want to die on the hill of peaceful Neo-Nazis, he's not it. There's plenty of other methheads who have the sense to couch their ideology in ways that don't outright say "and then we start shooting at the minorities until they're all dead or fled back to their own countries". Wrapping up an article by accusing others of engaging in fascist conspiracies, while the entirety of the rest of the article was spent outlining and explaining the actual, ongoing fascist conspiracy the article's writer is engaged in, and that's targeted at said others. That's some top-of-the-food-chain grade chutzpah right there

Now that is a very interesting reading of an article that says the following:
-This lawsuit, before it's even gone to trial, is already having an effect.
This is true for every lawsuit or court trial since the dawn of TV news. The trial of Charlie Manson adversely affected the Manson Family and other similar drug cults.

-Several defendants have flouted court orders and been sanctioned because of it.
If you don't want to be held in contempt of court, maybe turn up for court and don't accuse the judge of being a ZOG puppet kike or whatever. Even run-of-the-mill wiggers know to shut the fuck up in court.

-Several groups have changed their names because of this, and other individuals are disavowing.
This is what happens with every political group that isn't one of the two parties when the legal system opens its maw to eat them. You don't see many out-and-proud members of the SLA anymore. The members in it for pussy will slink back to the sidelines and join another movement in a few years. The true believers will join other sects or form their own. On and on the game of fringe politics goes.

This is true, because this suit has the chance to set a precedent that any injuries at a public assembly are the fault of the organizers- if they cannot prove that Spencer was inciting violence. If that doesn't end up being their tact, then I will support Spencer, even though I think he's a total twat.
