It seems like the premise of Rick & Morty is unadulterated nihilism. I feel Rick himself is a self insert of the creator's self-proclaimed "genius" that allows him to be a miserable, cynical scientist while using his family as punching bags. If the Rick & Morty fandom is so enlightened by its supposed double entendres, why did they embarrass themselves over a McDonald's dipping sauce?
the worst part is the sauce wasnt even that good. i dont know what nostalgia brain was making them think it tasted like, that shit just tasted like straight soy sauce. It was terrible. They made some other asian inspired dipping sauce some time later and i thought that was what it would've tasted like

THIS NIGGA WATCHES HIS ANIMES IN DUBS 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣
What's wrong with that? The way I see it, why the fuck would I waste time consuming media in a language I don't speak?

Also, with many of the anime I watch, the dub is legitimately better than a straight translation of the Japanese would have been.

Nibba fr like anime dialogue will go on for 5 minutes and it's like the most boring bland "character development" and I have to devote my full attention to an "autist thinks this is how people talk" dialogue.

Movies are different; they have a limited time, dialogue needs to be short and have impact. An actor reading his line in french haas more emotion than 3 chipmunks discussing fucking the self insert (like heckling real women would) for 5 minutes. Having actors read (and act) their lines will be more impactful than anime ever will. You cannot dub that.

Oh and anime VAs are bland. There's no "subtext" a VA can convey that another one cannot. That's why VA are paid shit and can easily be replaced, unless you're really good like Buggs Bunny, or that south American Homer Simpson

You obviously don't watch anime from thirty years ago. It was a dark time for dubs.

Anyway, the Rick and Morty anime is...odd? I'm not sure I know what's going on. Maybe that's the point.

Not gonna lie, most japs talking sounds the same to me. Every now and then I'll hear a stand out performance, but that's few and far between.

Obviously some are better than than others. But when I watch, for example the dub of Yu Yu Hakusho with the English subtitles on (just to have a comparison) The dub is hands down better in every single line.

Other times, like Shin Chan, the dub will create an entirely different show that is superior to the original.

Another famous old anime is DBZ. Yeah some of the dubs really suck, but at least they didn't do something batshit, like have the now elderly grandma who voiced kid Goku 30+ still voicing the same character as a grown ass man.

I've seen two episodes and I have no fucking clue what's going on. I think its on purpose since the scenes are done out of order and in different time periods. The only thing I know is that the Wikipedia says it takes place between season 5 and 6 and that this is not the main Rick and Morty. But it doesn't have incest or meta jokes so its already better than regular Rick and Morty.

I haven't seen Rick and Morty since season 4 or 5 but this anime series is fucking terrible. Whoever made it literally does not understand what Rick and Morty is. Apart from that single parody scene of Citizen Kane, it's literally generic-arse modern anime with the skin of Rick and Morty.

Its called Rick & Morty: The Anime, not Rick & Morty: The Same Show But Produced by a Different Animation Studio.

Yeah but it's also called Rick & Morty. This show is so tangentially related to Rick and Morty that you could remove Rick and Morty and it would still be the same piece of crap anime show.

Bushworld Adventures is a different take on Rick and Morty that is still undeniably Rick and Morty.

Honestly when it comes to people saying Rick and Morty sucks now I have to wonder if it really did fall off in quality or if they just stopped being 14 because the show was always meh imo. It could be funny when it tried and has some standout episodes but most of the time it felt (and still feels) like something an edgy and depressed middle school boy who just learned all about sex would write. I’ll say, as someone who’s fallen down the conspiracy rabbit hole a bunch, that the show does reference various conspiracies and does it surprisingly well but that’s undermined by the fact that it chases the next joke about Rick burping every 2 seconds. And I’ve seen a bit of the anime, it’s meh but the artstyle is not that good and the voice acting has gone extremely downhill since I last watched the show in the seasons that Justin Roiland was on

I was almost 30 when it started, so I have zero childhood nostalgia for the show. There was a definite change in the writing. The focus slowly shifted from one-off wacky sci fi adventures with a drunk and his hapless sidekick in the first two seasons and started to focus on world building and character development and got incredibly gay.

Imagine if the next season of Smiling Friends featured a season long arc where Pim's positive attitude is just to cover up the pain of being molested by his dad and it was played 100% serious and the show got really up its own ass about it. That's what happened to Rick and Morty. It was a dumb sci-fi show that was cleverly written that people liked to smoke weed and laugh at. When it tried to turn itself into more than that, it sucked dick and the only people who like it now are people who are so autistic, cartoons make them cry.

I would say the rot starts as early as the fourth episode where they introduce multiverse theory and Rick’s pop-nihilistic-cum-solipsistic abandonment of a reality he himself essentially destroyed. It is the direct origin of shot like the Council of Ricks. From there, the only stakes you really have are character-driven, and no one involved was a good enough writer to pull something like that off.

I would make the case that lore free Rick and Morty is dogshit because Rick is a horribly unlikable and Morty is a whiney little bitch and Roiland/Harmon themselves can't write just engage in shameless plagerism with the shameless "we'll name what we are plagerizing and people will forgive us because meta rules!" while in the same breath having Rick shit on the very concept of lore and meta shit because Harmon/Roiland have just enough shame to know they are hypothetical hacks.

But the show itself is dogshit and lore at least gives it a veer of credibility and seriousness to distract from the structural flaws of the show and characters.

The biggest irony is that Venture Brothers does Rick and Morty way fucking better than actual Rick and Morty. Rusty 's a cunt like Rick, but Publick and Hammer at least will make him likable and explore his Freudian Excuse for being a cunt. And Dean and Hank still have their respective innocence to them and good heart, while Morty is just as evil as Rick and Evil Morty at this point and bits where he does good (like reject Planetina when she kills innocent mine workers) are forced and unearned and shoehorned in purely to advance/resolve plotlines that require Morty to suddenly go all moral fag to resolve/advance.

At best, the most Rick and Morty can hope for once it finally gets shut down, is to be cannibalized for a reconstruction spiritual successor homage show a couple of decades down the road by someone with talent, the way Venture Brothers is to Johnny Quest, where a writer takes the bare bones core of Rick and Morty and reconstructs it in a way to actually make good on the core concept of the series, so much as they exist.

The problem with rick and morty is that its too irony poisoned to actually commit to the lore but the writers are too egocentric to be truly irreverent. They will release lore episodes that people actually like and then continually shit on people who want more lore episodes, but when it comes to character drama they have no problem drawing from the lore to write "serious episodes".

If rick and morty just commited to the lore (or the irreverence) it would be ten times better isntead of this discombobulated mess that's both too cool for school and also desperately wants to be part of the drama class.

putting this in the more active thread, teaser for season 8.
couldnt even sit through the whole thing it was so unfunny.
