It's because the modern, leftist regime took over in the 60's and has been in power ever since. Media from any decade from the 60's on shares more or less the same blank slatist/me first/anti-nationalist/hedonistic ethos. It's an inversion of the previous era's ideals of personal sacrifice, nation, family, etc.

It's basically the Taliban destroying statues of Buddha.
