I remember a British journalist who was a flaming fag left Weimar after Hitler came to power and went to Russia. In the 1930's Stalin began to crack down on homosexuality and he sent a letter to Stalin's office complaining about this. When they opened the old Soviet archives they found his letter, and they found out that Stalin himself had read the letter. He didn't write back to the journalist - he just wrote "idiot and degenerate" across the top of the letter and gave it to the KGB.
