RIP Steve Albini.

Jesus Fuck, I CANNOT believe he is dead. I am shocked down to my toes. He informed so much of my musical taste. 'Atomizer' is one of the best American albums of all time, in my humble opinion. Many loved him, and probably just as many hated his guts, but for me.... this is a Terrible, terrible day.

edit: And Gary Floyd, too! wtf

Roger Corman, Pioneering Independent Producer and King of B Movies, Dies at 98
Jeez. How many directors and creative types came out of the Corman factory? Too man to list.

Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Ron Howard, Peter Bogdanovich,, Jonathan Demme, Joe Dante, James Cameron, John Sayles, Jonathan Kaplan, Curtis Hanson, Jack Hill, Robert Towne, Menahem Golan, James Horner, and Timur Bekmambetov to name a few. Not to mention Jack Nicholson, Peter Fonda, Bruce Dern, Charles Bronson, Dennis Hopper, Tommy Lee Jones, Talia Shire, Sandra Bullock, Robert De Niro, and David Carradine.

One of his "Poe cycle" films that I enjoyed was actually derived from H.P. Lovecraft's The Strange Case of Charles Dexter Ward, but was given the title of a Poe poem by AIP against Corman's wishes to suggest a continuity with Corman's other Poe adaptions. I refer to The Haunted Palace.

One of the best to do it, making movies that is.

Add to the list Sylvester Stallone.

I think there might be a gold medal waiting for Roger Corman at the end of the tunnel for living up to 98 and arguably making classics that were both corny and entertaining at the same time.

He’s the perfect example of not taking himself too seriously and not being the kind of film director that has to rely on making useless sequels and superhero movies that will be forgotten in less than a week.

Either way, long live Corman.

Roger Corman may have been the most important producers in cinema.
RIP Corman. You fucking legend.
What a badass, responsible for so much fun schlock as well as actually good films, and the opposite of today's joyless prodigal Hollywood. He was one of the first to bring Lovecraft to the screen in "The Haunted Palace," actually an adaptation of "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward": the film also featured Vincent Price, who I still mourn for not having lived as long as Corman.

Oh, Commander X already mentioned The Haunted Palace. Well fuck it, it's good enough to be worth mentioning again.
