For those who don't know, Risk of Rain was this weird little 2D roguelite-arena shooter hybrid that got quite a bit of attention back when it was released in 2013. It's a neat little thing that you can sink quite a bit of time into that nevertheless has some pretty glaring issues (like how ranged characters are so much better than melee ones that the latter early on actually becoming better in the late game isn't worth pursuing).

Just about a day ago now, the lead developer of said game published this blogpost on Tumblr, showcasing what they openly admit to be very early gifs and screenshots of a sequel, the biggest difference so far being the jump from 2D to 3D (which alleviates another problem the original had, incidentally - most of the sprites were incredibly tiny).

Hopefully Chef and Acrid make it back into the sequel safe and sound.

playing risk of rain multiplayer with friends, pizza, and too much caffeine was amazing when we had a couple circuits through the levels and had some crazy combos for upgrades.

Developer FAQ.

The gist of it is: Online multiplayer might not be the complete mess it was in the first game, they won't just port all the characters into the new one, stating that they only bringing back characters whose gameplay translates well (Commander, Engineer) or are fan favorites (HAN-D, maybe Acrid) and the guy scoring the first game is back for the second one.

I really liked the first on Vita, was a perfect game for that machine. Tried the PS4 version but it could have done with zooming in a bit. As you say, the game had issues, but was brilliant fun when you had a good run. A sequel with the kinks ironed out would be most welcome.
