Frankly, if I was an investor I’d refuse to give my money to any ninny who wanted to set up shop in any of the overcrowded, overpriced tech hubs. I’d use that as my first-pass question for weeding out idiots. “Where do you plan to establish your offices? Silicon valley? Get out of my office.”

You can find lots of talented people in Dallas, Atlanta, and Durham for a fraction of the cost. You have better places to spend your money. Unless the land itself is going to magically improve the quality of your software, then there’s no reason to put yourself in one of the most expensive locations in the western world.

Not to mention that these expensive places tend to have horrific commute times, which burdens your employees and drains away their morale before they even reach the office. Seriously, this is stupid. You should have learned this lesson in the dot-com crash 17 years ago.

It's so, so odd. I haven't read Shamus in a long time, and I didn't always agree with his critiques (a lot of his nitpicking over both Mass Effect and Skyrim came across as mildly :autistic, but he had good insights and a nice, engaging style. Amazing he sees any merit in Bob's crap at all.

When you adjust for cost of living California has more poverty than any other state, and it has a lower high school graduation rate than states such as West Virginia. It's not in any sense a place where "everyone" is doing well. The middle class, which is largely white, has fled expensive coastal enclaves so they are increasingly made up a small white/Asian elite and a bunch of brown slaves that live in poverty and do all the poorly paid work. When you describe it in real terms, like some central American woman raising a rich white programmer's kids, it stops seeming "progressive" real quick. I'm not sure if Bob is deluded enough to buy the PR, but hey maybe he is. He doesn't leave his basement enough to know what is really going on and sees everything through hyperreal media narratives.
