Offworld Trading Company (a game about resources and wheeling and dealing on Mars) does have a thing where you can send resources to the asteroid belt and reap tons of profit-because people are working up there, I guess. But OTC is actually smart about it-there's always a huge market for food, water, and oxygen, because those things are kind of needed, you have to pay to send the rocket, and it takes time to get your paycheck in. Regardless of space elevators or whatever, moving shit takes time and energy.
I actually did a presentation back in high school about "Vertical Farms". The idea behind them is maximizing space while using as little space as possible. To get super autistic, if the OTC thing wasn't already, that's the kind of stuff that we're going to build going into the future, maximizing output while minimizing input. So no, Bob, we won't be farming on the moon. Let's not even get into the logistics of terraforming the fucking moon, or what tech we need to do that, just consider this: How much space is on the moon, and how does it compare to how much farmland we have here on Earth? And when it comes to farming, you don't just need the land that grows the crops, you need a place for the workers to sleep. Oh, robots? Need space for the power generation, and for people to maintain that power generation. No matter how much you automate, you need a real human to whack it with a hammer when it fucks up.
Wheat on the moon is not impossible, but it's so inefficient that, unless we find valuable resources in the moon and launch heavy mining operations, we won't actually grow anything on the moon. All signs point to "Bob, you're fucking retarded."
This was a long winded rant, but I just get mad when people are this damn stupid.
