You mean "scientism"; it's patent nonsense for stupid people in want of a "sky daddy" and more or less well recognized as such within contemporary academic thought (there are probably some archaic holdovers who know that they can milk it for money relying on public gullibility and undereducation, but that's about it; the liars or idiots who falsely conflate scientism, or "science-friendly religions" such as "secular Humanism" with atheism are even worse, if not for their stupidity, then their patent dishonesty and ignorance).Trust me, he has this exact view on what scientists actually do.
For all his disdain for religious practices and dogmas, he treats scientific approaches with the same fervour some zealots approach their respective religious doctrines.
It's popularity probably peaked around the time of the 1800s Industrial revolution and inventions such as the assembly line since it served as the equivalent of a "cargo cult" religion for stupid or illiterate people, supported by silly pop-cultural myths and fables (such as the reality that scientific and technological thought advanced superiorly in many past cultures than it does or has today, since Francis Bacon's take on the inductive method was institutionalized in the so-called "modern" scientific sense.
(Plenty of examples include ancient China inventing gunpower centuries before the West, or accomplishments, such as the building of the Great Pyramids with the ancient technology of that day and age being far superior to comparatively trivial feats such as landing on the moon - which was done more just for the purpose of an arms race with the Soviets than anything "scientific" to begin with - or whatnot).
