Bobby cannot believe that a school district refuses free food (archive of WP article)
I still don't understand why American school has to provide free food to students. This policy might make sense in the mountains of Guizhou, where kids have to work the fields or else they and their families would stave. But in the Home of The Whoppers?
So I live just north of the School District (Waukesha Wisconsin) and I know the full story, here it is:
Pre-pandemic - Wuakesha would have kids charge for lunch every day, you could pay into a school's account and then parents would be charged, if you were poor (poor in this case means up to 185% of the poverty line) your child would get school breakfast and lunch for free. If a kid didn't have money for lunch, they could get a sandwich and the parents would be notified, if the kid continued to not have money for lunches, a wellness check would happen on the parents
Pandemic - during the pandemic, school lunch system was changed so that all kids got both breakfast and lunch for free. To do this, they would hand out the breakfasts and lunches as kids walked in to their classrooms, this meant that a lot of extra food waste was ending up in the garbage as many kids ate and many brought lunches. Parents also were worried that kids would either trade extra food for money, or would eat extra meals. That is what they meant by "spoiing".
Whats happeneing is waukesha is going back to the pre-pandemic meal plan.
