Is Bob even part of the "Cool Kids Club" or just an outsider who clings on? I might be confusing him for Dobson for being an orbiter that's not really part of the clique.
Compared to Dobson, Bob is actually downright suave, from what I can tell. When he's not ranting about how Republicans have it coming and sounding creepily fascist, he kisses the right ass, attacks the right people, and is usefully vitriolic, when he doesn't go too far. And let's not forget he actually produces a steady stream of content. I'd imagine he's considered marginally useful but definitely expendable if he ever fucks up big-time, or if for whatever reason his unhinged Twitter rants caught the wrong persons attention.

By comparison Dobson is barely functional.

I'm pretty sure he's an outsider. He lives on the wrong coast and I never really see him in group photos that aren't obviously staged. He doesn't have a hatedom the same way Dobson does, though, and he actually makes content, so there's two things he's managed to be more functional than the blue bear at.

As far as his overall reputation, pretty much the only people who reference him positively in the scene are b-list Escapist refugees like Extra Credits and Errant Signal. I've never seen him have a back-and-forth with any of the Literally Whos (aside from those hilarious photos he was able to get standing next to Anita-senpai), he's not on any of the popular sites after Faraci threw him a bone at Badass Digest. Most games media sites don't want or need his content, and what passes for the YouTube film criticism community openly mocks him.

Dobson is different because he's such an autistic, nasty little shit he no longer has any actual fans, just pitiers. Bob has lots of people who don't like him much, but for some reason, has an actual fandom and does stuff.

I think it's because Bob is more about sweeping nasty generalizations than he is about Dobson's weird proclivity for getting rude and obnoxious with individuals for no sensible reason.

Good point. Bob only chimps out at some of the people he talks to. Dobbo chimps out at everyone whose girldick he isn't actively sucking.

My opinion is sheerest guesswork based almost entirely on this thread, because I don't hate myself enough to follow these people in a non-mocking way, but if you're right then his "And who are you supposed to be, sport?" sneers when someone calls him out on Twitter are even more hilarious.

My guess is that prior to Gamergate, Bob had built up a decent sized fanbase by being the complete opposite of internet critics of the time. Instead of being a loud and obnoxious, shouting about anything wrong with a movie, Bob was a calm and collected guy. He made multiple videos going in-depth on certain aspects of nerd culture, which served as a sort of gateway to material that some might not have searched out. He had videos on the history of nerd culture and tried (to varying degrees of success) to tie events and trends to the cultural Zeitgeist. Throw in his branching out into multiple facets of nerd culture, i.e. video games, comics, etc., and it's easy to see how he could build up a fanbase, which is now providing him with a tidy sum of money on Patreon.

Post-Gamergate he went off the reservation into Superior Future land.

Admittedly, if Bob's fans were to start looking at what he does off of YouTube/Escapist/Geek.com/Etc., they get a completely different picture of the man. He quickly goes from a calm and collected individual to a left-leaning fascist that wants to break the working class through technological advancement, aka Moon Wheat.

This seems right but I think instead of GamerGate I think it was Sarkeesian when Bob started to change. He refused to acknowledge any criticism of her and insisted that it was misogyny. He bought way into her and doubled down when it was clear the hatred against her was because of her claims of video game effects rather than her gender. Before I left his blog for good I remember even his fans seemed to not like Bob all that much. Especially with Sarkeesian related posts a lot of people would refer to Bob as a white knight and those posts tend to got higher ratings while posts supporting Bob or Sarkeesian would not and get a lot of rebuttals. By the time GamerGate happened Bob went bad to worse. I think Bob lost most of his fans that he made during the earlier GameOverthinker and Escapist days and built a new fanbase of SJWs. Bob is not getting those old fans back so he needs to maintain the SJW crowd because otherwise he has nothing left.

Those hoverhand pictures of Bob and Anita speak louder than any words.

While I agree with @link1234 about when the switch was, I have listened to his older stuff. He did present this persona of being very analytical and in-depth, and off the top of my head there's like three people that do that on the internet? He gave the impression of being smart-note, I say the IMPRESSION, because the reality is anything but.

How dare they survive a shooting! No sympathy for almost dying from me!

I dunno, Philip DeFranco's a Libertarian, and he's crushing Bob in influence:

Ok I know I bordered on severe A-logging last time this came up, so I'll restrict myself to asking: when did Bob get on the anti-cop bandwagon?

I know this isn't on topic of what "exceptional" things Bob has retweeted and said above, but does anyone know his taste in music at all? I am genuinely curious about his tastes in music since he endlessly spergs out about genre movies (that mostly play it safe) and mario, yet a totally different medium of entertainment where his political views can't possibly infect?

Yeah, how are you supposed to enforce a Superior Future without some kind of authority?

People will somehow put away their guns and just go along with Superior Fyootcha because some fat blob whines at them. They won't, in the absence of any police, just go shoot him or anything.

Surprisingly enough, music's a medium he's largely stayed out of. IIRC, he retweeted something that compared #BernieOrBust people to "The self-righteous DIY Punk guy who never grew up." (Well, time to spam Fugazi at him until he cracks), he apparently likes Springsteen, but disagrees with him championing the common man (OFC), and he said in his Titanic video that movies need more end credits ballads like "My Heart Will Go On".

But if I had to guess what music he listens to on a regular basis, I'd imagine he listens to a lot of 80s pop/rock that people like my mom listen to and maybe old NES soundtracks.
