I get the impression that many of them believed it was a popularity contest to begin with and why they're so upset is because to them this looks like someone pulled out some dusty old rule to take it away from the true winner. He thinks the source of evil are white people, the working class, and nationalists (read that as people who don't want the world under one flag).
