As I've indicated here and there, I'm a New York kiwi. But it wasn't always so. Mama Ram was born in the poorest part of Appalachia, in western NC. She grew up in a kind of poverty that most of us can only imagine. She didn't have reliable electricity for much of her life, my grandfather was a drunk, and until the age of 11 her whole family was dirt poor. At that age, her mother died from meningitis because their house was too snowbound for emergency services to reach; her father drank himself to death six months later. She and her numerous siblings were split up among various relatives, most of whom were pretty shitty. She didn't see a dentist until she was in her first year of college (a special college only open to the poor) and had problems with her teeth for the rest of her life. Malnutrition from the time she was born led to lifelong digestive issues which may have led to the cancer that killed her.

She got out of that poverty and wound up as a fairly celebrated epidemiologist. But she never lost touch with those roots, with the people she knew growing up. In the last 15 years or so of her life she turned from lifelong Democratic voting to hardcore rightwingery specifically because the Democratic party was turning its back on people like her.

So when I remember her history, when I remember the things I saw during semi-regular trips to that part of the country, and then when I hear this fat, bloated, self-righteous, pig-ignorant, immature, loathsome, hateful, marble-mouthed, short-dicked, ass-fucking PRIVILEGED simpleton dare to proclaim that the poverty that shaped my mother and her family's entire fucking life is "fake"...

... Well, Mola Ram wants to rip out a diabetic heart and feed it to the fat fuck. Just a little.

Just I remember when I first found this site -- I'm pretty sure I was following up on some idiocy perpetrated either by Bob or Brianna Wu -- that someone advised me Bob inspired more anger than the usual lolcow. God knows it's true; he just has this unique blend of smugness, ignorance, and that je ne sai quoi that makes you want to take a tire iron to his nuts.

The first one I think of is The Counselor, the first original screenplay by Cormac McCarthy and directed by Ridley Scott. The Circle (Tom Hanks, Emma Watson) is another one, but then Bobby likes it (or at least tried his hardest to defend it).

And whatever happened to Pixels, the "review" of which brought Bobby his only 15 minutes of fame?

"Culture" will not sell in democratic politics, simply because your "culture" is my "trash". I grant that Bobby makes a semi-valid point about environmental issues, but his analysis is dumb. The environment issue is so intractable not because people are "visionless" and cannot envisage a world beyond them; quite the contrary, it is precisely because people has envisage a world beyond their homes, the whole wide world that belongs to nobody, that they are so careless about the environment, for whatever toxic waste they produce they can just dump it elsewhere. Their action is not due to stupidity, but is rather a rational decision given the option to "externalize" their costs. What we need is a political leader who is willing to cut through this "tragedy of commons" and make the necessary compromise. Trump is definitely not this leader, but I'm in serious doubt that Rodham could do any better.

I'd also bring up The Dark Tower, which apparently went out of its way to insult a fanbase twice as crazy if only a third as large as that of the Marvel movies (and with which there has to be a ton of crossover).

Because immediate survival will always trump long term concerns. Always! Oh and hey... Trump focused on immediate survival, and Clinton talked about long term concerns. Funny that....

Anyway, you want people to care about the environment? Step 1 is to get them rich. Once they're at least semi-comfortable, they can afford to care.
