Transformers was basically Hasbro buying the rights to a pair of Japanese toy lines where robots transformed into vehicles and household items and said "Make a 'verse around this" and they did.

The toys didn't come after the show, the show was invented from whole cloth to create a market for a toy line most kids in the US had never heard of and would otherwise probably never buy.

It's also why certain characters like Soundwave and Megatron turn into human-sized items like pistols and cassette recorders, in a bit of incongruity when 99% of the rest of the 'bots are vehicles of some kind.

Some of those plotlines could get pretty dark, like Spiral Zone, for example? Start of the series and the bad guy has already won, he's enslaved half the globe with mind-control bacteria that turn people into obedient zombies with flesh-colored blemishes all over their bodies? And only a glitch in the deploying of the microbes prevented it from being 100% off the bat? And the sum total of the remaining free world now has a zombie apocalypse on it's hands, before it was cool?
