The odd thing about that whole defense is that much of the comics themselves rarely followed the auteur theory to a great extent. Sure, there were some eras/series where auteurism was unquestionable, but for the most part the series were heavily editor-driven where the writers and artists (and the rare artist/writers) are no longer allowed complete autonomy from upper management. Though in recent years it has been more commonplace.

Also, auteur theory is mostly focused on the directors' personal footprint in a production. In which case those sorts of films tend to be uncommon unless they are independent productions. In either case, auteur theory these days is less of an indicator on whether a movie is good or how well it works as a film because movies are very often a collaborative effort and anything planned to make decent money gets screen tested etc until it's considered for release. Auteur theory is usually left to the film scholars, often in hindsight to a large body of work, and is only major issue in film criticism of new releases for anyone who is vehement film snob who treats anything mainstream with disdain. Or in Bob's case, taking a relatively shop-worn straw man as an excuse
