Al was the straight man for Tim's crazy antics. He was just there to provide comedic contrast by being a competent everyman. No matter how much Tim made fun of Al, Al was always vindicated when Tim's overpowered creations blew up, sometimes literally, in his face.

The only thing that could make an Al Borland spin off kinda work is if they went The Andy Griffith route and he was the only regular guy in a town full of weirdos but that wouldn't work because Al and Andy are two very different characters. Bob doesn't care about this because all he cares about is erasing Tim Allen from his own creation.

I doubt he watched the show all that often because compared to what was coming out at the time, Home Improvement was kind of meh and kind of blends in with the other sitcoms of the late 80s/early 90s. The only thing that stands out to me is those scene transitions because those have not aged well.

the scenes that they're referring to are in no way endorsing racism against Asian people. For context, one recurring joke in the film is that there's an Asian restaurant owner who has multiple Asian mail-order brides who speaks to them in broken, Asian-accented English, because he thinks that they'll understand him that way (they don't speak English). Personally, I thought that the movie made it very clear that the restaurant owner's ignorance was the butt of the joke and it was on the side of the people who experienced second-hand embarrassment from it. But of course, blue-curtain analyzers like Bob are either too dense to understand this or are looking to virtue signal, so they completely ignore any context and argue that depiction = endorsement (which ironically enough, they trotted out the opposite argument when it came to defending Cuties, which was an obvious piece of pedo bait).

On a related note, I did really enjoy this movie and recommend it to my fellow Kiwis. Felt like Paul Thomas Anderson doing his own version of Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, where you follow the characters as they navigate the idiosyncrasies of a particular time and place (in this case, early 70s San Fernando Valley rather than late 60s Hollywood).

Also, part of me wants to see Bob review There Will Be Blood or The Master just to see how badly he'd fuck up trying to analyze actually challenging, adult material rather than the consoomer capeshit that's his bread and butter.
