I know why Bob hates Mortal Kombat, it's for the same reason he hated Sonic. It was one of the games that threatened Nintendo's dominance in gaming. It made Sega look better, especially to the edgy kids he hated when he was a kid. Mortal Kombat was a system seller for Sega and it also fit with Sega's ad campaign that they were cooler and edgier than Nintendo.

Bob actually hates consumer choice and prefers one monolithic company to rule each industry with an iron fist, and for it to be the one he picked. For him it is Disney for movies, Nintendo for gaming. He hates DC for "threatening" Marvel, and he hates Sonic for "threatening" Mario. Where Mortal Kombat fits in here is that up until Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter II was the biggest fighting game and that series started as a Nintendo exclusive in North America.

They either have no "true" persona, or are deeply upset/ashamed with the one they know they have, so they build false personas around themselves, ones that are all-knowing and all-seeing and never wrong about some pet topic. In Current Year (tm) where independent thought is dangerous and problematic, those topics are very very limited, and boil down to just shallow consoomer pop culture and purity of political ideology.

Bob's false persona, the one he constructed to avoid having to dwell on the fact he's a fat, dumb, loser, is one who knows more about any comic, film, video game or other IP-based entertainment monolith than you.
