Spielberg, Lucas, Coppola, De Palma, Scorsese, and Milius "invented" blockbusters by...breaking the Hollywood mold of genre pictures. They were influenced by cinema from Europe and the workmanship of Ford, Kurosawa, Lean, Hawks, Kubrick, and Hitchcock. Their influences made cinema as big as it ever was, and could be.

The USC film gang, the American Zoetrope boys I just mentioned just did it so well as young men that it become the new paradigm. They all knew each other and helped each other. Spielberg shot parts of the Scarface climax, Lucas shot parts of the Godfather. De Palma was the one who said to Lucas that they needed text at the beginning of the original star wars. Scorsese was the one who showed them Howard Hughes' "Hells Angels", which caused Milius to get up in the theater and point at the screen, yelling "THATS WHAT WE NEED TO DO!"

Blame fucking Howard Hughes if you want, for inventing the Blockbuster you talentless hack.

If you want a modern day equivalent for breaking the genre mold, look at stuff like Todd Phillips flipping the superhero genre on its head by making a character study out of the Joker, and reaching a billion dollars box office. Look at unexpected hits like Squid Game. Look at the giant sprawling series like Game of Thrones first 4 seasons. Without Joker for example, would there be a new Batman where CLASSIC Paul Dano plays Riddler? Bob's fuck off opinions on how great the MCU movies are can actually be traced back to Jon Favreau and his work with Robert Downey Jr on Iron Man. Iron Man and Dark Knight coming out in the same year solidified the "realistic" superhero tale. Bob doesn't respect that. He likes the Whedon and Gunn "tongue-in-cheek" shlock where you never have to worry about things going wrong, or consequences being permanent. The good guys win clean, and the good guys always stand for the progressive politics.

Movies where the worst thing to happen is Iron man and Black Widow dying after the actors are sick of playing the characters and want out.

It was Christopher Nolan and Jon Favreau who was breaking the mold in 2008, and its Jon Favreau again breaking the mold of shitty Star Wars movies to make "realistic nostalgia" film and television. I don't even think Boba Fett or Mandalorian are good but they're way way more attractive to look at than the sequels with their zippy zoomer CGI crap that reminds me of the late stage MCU.

As for Whedon and Gunn, the MCU and their stupid actions keep getting them in trouble with women, and causing PR problems. The MCU was probably bad for Whedon's career in the long run. Avengers and Guardians are fine, but they're exactly what Bob thinks Spielberg and Lucas were. If you go back and watch Indiana Jones or Star wars, you can see that yes they're pulp movies based on 30s action serials and tropes, but they're shot very well. Star Wars has Lucas's Kurosawa influences all over it. Indiana Jones has a ton of David Lean with Lawrence of Arabia style shots, since that is truly the big epic that inspired Spielberg's style.

Bob is just a complete asshole when it comes to films that don't fit into his view on what is art. He doesn't like serious cinema, he likes SHLOCK. His entire career is being a film snob about shlocky garbage, and pretending to enjoy foreign cinema.

If you take even five minutes to look at the aesthetics of Fascism or Nazism, or the writings of their thinkers, you immediately notice that they are pursuing a futurist bend. They have a love of speed, the mechanical, sharp edges, etc. Their writings depict a a future of violence, of the youth taking a cudgel to the elderly and decrepit, they depict a world where the supposed inefficiencies of business world in free market capitalism are refined by bringing corporate bodies and unions together under the state, where everything is controlled and filtered to reduce waste. There's a reason they called it the "Third Way", there's a reason they pursued a "New Order", there's a reason almost all of them fought as foot soldiers in the Great War. They were the political youths of the 1920s when they had their awakening and ushered out the tired old men of the 1870-90s they saw as corrupt and too conservative. These are not the terms or experiences of people who want to return to some older period or relive the past glories, though it plays a part. Even agrarian ideologies like Hitler's Nazism and the Iron Guard ultimately believed the future was in farming, that the frontier attitude of the United States which so propelled that country to greatness could be replicated on the vast steppes of Eastern Europe.

This is all to say that Movie Bob's idea of Fascism is incredibly ironic, and at times histrionic. He can only ever view things through the permanent present. There is no past to him that is not filtered through the lens of today's partisan Republican v Democrat political sphere. Republicans today are only conservatives today- they hold the exact same positions of the most radical Republicans of 1860. He cannot perceive anything beyond the here and now because of his infantilisation. Democrats good because XYZ, Democrats are Progressive, therefore because Republicans bad they are Fascists, and therefore Fascists are Conservatives. Needless to say, it is not Republicans who are pushing the tyrannical view of the Fascist future- they are not the ones pushing for science fiction in the present day, of complete upheaval of society to counter some esoteric threat from the environment, to radically alter the structure of the political and economic environments into one whole, to create a world of high-tech-nocracy.

I didn't read all the replies to this thread with all the historical stuff about fascism so I apologize if repeating. The "backwards" looking of the fascist movements which gets them painted as "reactionary" and "conservative" (which confirms to people like Bob that they're right-wing) was super specific about looking towards former states of Germany, Italy, etc. When those states were seen as progressive standard bearers, not conservative retrenchments. The German case is obvious, instead of the failed Weimar that could do nothing to progress and literally not function as a government they pointed to the German Empire that was rapidly industrializing, innovating under Bismarck's policies that were copied across the world and quickly expanding in Europe and defeating nearby empires. They never proposed to limit the government and reduce it to the policies of some earlier era, they called on a new expansive government that would "scientifically" manage the entire nation towards a SUPERI- glorious dominant future.

Bob is almost literally a fascist as befits the fascist era. And he goes beyond that from the more benign fascism of a Mussolini to the openly genocidal fascism of Hitler. It's like getting hooked on a cheap drug. Twitter likes and interactions aren't nearly as healthy or even fulfilling as genuine, real life friendships and laughs. I honestly have no idea how Bob, Chu and Luke operate Twitter. Even if they didn't follow anyone else (and they do, Bob follows nearly 4,000 accounts) the other two alone would fill your feed with everything they tweet and retweet.

I don't think it's physically possible to read all these tweets while constantly reading the new tweets while also posting your own tweets at the rates they do. Like, I'm doing jokes here but at the same time it's dawning on me just how much time they spend on Twitter and realizing it must actually be all their time.

Sometimes I feel bad about reading too much Twitter or Kiwi Farms or whatever else because I spent a few hours on it during a day. But what these dudes do every single day seems unimaginable. They have excised literally everything else in their lives except their jobs (and not even that in Chu's case) for Twitter. And in Bob's case his "job" is basically just fodder for his Twitter. (I'm reluctant to consider some of these people's non-Twitter leisure to be non-Twitter considering how much they spend talking about it on Twitter. Luke sees a two hour movie and then spends two years talking about it in tens of thousands of tweets on Twitter.)

There used to be a way you could see someone else's Twitter timeline but it'd probably break my brain to see what Bob sees.
