Personally I loved it. I’m sure most of that loving it is due to nostalgia for the character but aside from that it was just a simple fun movie.

If I had to describe it I’d say that it was a cozy watch. Like a big comfy blanket.

I'm late to reply, and I should've said my piece yesterday right when I got out of my screening for Sonic 2. That said, what the fuck was even he expecting? If he wants dark and gritty Sonic, he needs to go back to fucking himself with Sonic 06, SatAM or some Archie shit. I'm not saying that Sonic has to be all comedic but I'm also not expecting any dark and gritty Sonic media any time soon.

And guess what, this is also the same with MCU, and even both Spiderman and X-Men movies, where they experiment genres in the respective exact same universes, but consoomers like Slob Chipman adore anything with the Marvel brand (or they also like boring bullshit like Terminator Dark Fate and 2018 Tomb Raider; which both have the same exact glaring pacing issues and terrible fanfiction-like writing as the likes of Fantf4stick, but according to consoomers, they're good because "muh dark, gritty and edgy," am I right?). Slob's autistic mental breakdown over something like Sonic 2 is the equivalent to getting pissed off at a bear for shitting in the woods.

I personally nearly loved it. While it has some flaws mostly regarding the humans. It was such a fun film that embraced the spirit of the source material, fully confident of what it wanted to be. It might not be high art, but it doesn't have to be.

I even consider it the single best video game to film adaptation we have gotten. This, and Detective PIkachu have set the bar for future video game adaptations to come.

Which made me laugh it is a film that is handled with the upmost care. Even from a production stand point it is a very well crafted film. You really would have to a bitter, nitpicky son of a bitch to say this is not good. Or even hate its existence. Something we have established Bob is nothing, but that.

Star Wars came out in response to the Hollywood Renaissance, a "a period in film history when movies borrowed stylistic and narrative techniques from European art cinema, adopted an oppositional stance toward the American cultural status quo, and directly targeted a youth audience comprised of baby boomers in their teens and 20s. These movies dealt with alienation and social decay, and their message of cultural change tended to be rather pessimistic." Audience numbers for these films were dropping like a rock so filmmakers switched to making optimistic pictures like "Rocky", "Star Wars" and "E.T. " Neckbeards will swear that these movies are for adults until the cows come home, because they don't want to be ridiculed for liking such things, and will even point out the darker scenes in said movies as evidence. (The scene where ObiWan cuts a guy's hand off, the ending in Raiders of the Lost Ark, etc.) In other words, it's like a Schrodinger's Cat thing - Kids movies are only kids movies if neckbeards don't like them. If neckbeards do like them, suddenly, they're serious works of scholarly value which feature scenes that are too dark for children. (Nevermind the fact that kids have been watching and liking PG-13 violence for ages.)

To be fair to Tolkien, despite all the work and crazy world building he did, he had the self restraint to not vomit it all over the LotR and the Hobbit. Those were stories that alluded to the grand world he'd created, but had a tight focus.

The Silmarillion is where you can go full space cadet and find the whole history of Middle Earth from the literal first second of creation onward. Don't get me wrong, I love the Silmarillion, there were some awe inspiring and beautiful parts, but its definitely not as "readable". For me, the story of the Aule making the dwarves is one of my favorite bits from the whole LotR mythos.

Well yes, my point was that Tolkien knew just about every detail of his world. And honestly, don't forget he didn't finish the Silmarillion. What there was, I'm guessing was him working out the world and details, and then a lot of it he just never had time to spin into a narrative. Also I'm glad we share the same favorite part.

And Bob doesn't fucking know what he wants. Beyond names and brands that is. If thats all there, then that's good enough to him. Sonic 2 could have been the grimdarkest edgy thing. Or a perfect MCU clone. But it's Sonic. So it can do no right.

WILL be getting a trilogy. Just got back. My showing was nearly sold out 2 hours before showtime, the showing before me was sold out too. Theater was packed and it EXPLODED at the mid-credits sequence. I'm excited to see what kind of numbers it does.

That said, I actually think Illumination might do okay with Mario. I'm sure they'll turn the Goombas and Koopa Troopas into this movie's Minion equivalents but that'll actually work for them. Mario is so goofy and low stakes they would need to put in SERIOUS effort to cock it up even if they are just applying the Illumination formula to it. But I mean...they've failed before!

Oh I very much did. Just dethroned Detective Pikachu for best videogame movie. It really feels like they learned their lesson after the backlash to the old Movie Sonic design. The previous film was very much a relic of old movie logic: "Oh we need to make it more realistic and believeable!" "Oh no one can relate to a blue hedgehog so lets be sure to have human characters that hog all the screen time!". But then when everyone said "NO! That design is HORRIFYING!" and nerded out over every minor reference to the games...they "got it". "OH! So...so when you make a movie based on a videogame, people want references to the actual GAME! OH!" So yeah, more Sonic, less humans (Bob drastically overstates how long the human scene is, and I thought it was actually kinda funny), tons of game references.

As for Bob and "Dark & Edgy Sonic"? Man did anyone SEE Bob's old How To Save Sonic videos? As with many on the topic, they're hilariously hypocritical because he spends a ton of time bashing Sonic for trying to be dark & edgy...only to then say that the way to Save Sonic is to open the next game with Dr.Robotnik (*insert spergout over the name Eggman here*) KILLING all of Sonic's friends to establish him as a real threat.

And yeah the actual Sonic fandom is split between people who like sillier Sonic and those who like the edgier stuff. Personally I enjoy both because I find the idea of being edgy and serious with a character whose design aethetic is based on Felix the Cat going Super Saiyan is hilarious. I like that this movie brought in some more serious lore elements here and there. That said, I will criticize it for Sonic still being a smidge annoying. I know he's supposed to be younger here than in the games but occasionally I wanted to slap him early in the film. But yeah, the theater loved it. There *WILL* be a third movie. (Also I loved how someone earlier in the thread mentioned the idea that videogame movies might be the next "wave" now that Superhero Movies are winding down. Giving me the big thunks.)
