I always thought the whole Luke and Leia are brother and sister was basically because Lucas wanted to close out the story and leave no sequel hooks. It came out of left field, and it never made any sense to me.

When A New Hope was finished there was no plans for Vader to be Luke's father. Writers confirmed the idea for Luke and Vader happened during the writing of that film.

When The Empire Strike Back finished there was no plans for Leia to be Luke's sister. Hamill confirmed in the 80's in an interview the original plan was to take a break after ROTJ and then do a Sequel trilogy a few years later with Luke finding his sister who was not Leia and them going after the Emperor who would had survived ROTJ. But George in 83 wanted to tie it all up he was in the middle of a divorce and just adopted his daughter and wanted to be done with Star Wars movie then.

So all the talk by Lucas of always having this grand plan of 6 to 9 films is pure bullshit.
