Any memory I have of the 70s is pretty hazy. By the time I was watching Thundarr it might have been in repeats, though I'm pretty sure its original run was no earlier than 1980. Definitely I only saw it on Saturday mornings, back when Saturday morning cartoons were still a thing.

Except this story took place back when I was barely cracking the double digits of age. Bob still takes stuff like that seriously to the point of zealotry, you can't even say Bob has a youthful spirit as he hasn't matured to that point yet. A guy with a youthful spirit might have otherwise "childish" tastes but still handle his life like a mature adult, Bob can't go a week without making enemies over the pettiest of reasons, going on outbursts of rage over things most people won't even think about. In fact, I believe Bob fits right in the story I told: Back in those days, he would probably be the guy that takes the game way too seriously and harasses people over a perceived slight, nevermind the offender in question probably being a child!

It is dumber than that. At the end of the day you were just disappointed with the quality of how something turned out. Bob on the other hand had a real existential crisis because he has a weird devotion to Mario and treated him like he was his only companion in life. He felt like a crime was being committed against him and that they were taking away his friend. Despite the fact the change really in the grand scheme of things was a minor one. Especially since Mario wasn't super cemented yet and was still coming together as a franchise.

My favorite thing about this piece of Bob lore is how according to shithead it was the fact that Mario having his backstory changed to being from a fictional place was what made it impossible for him to be real. I think the easiest part is he'd probably be a big SatAM fan with the Sally Acorn crush and everything. The part I'm unsure on is he'd have his Mushroom Kingdom Mario breakdown over Sonic Underground or Sega unifying their brand for Sonic Adventure by jettisoning the various American & European interpretations so every market's Sonic was the same as Japan's Sonic.
