Growing up in a religious household, we never had any issues with Halloween either at home or at church. My parents made it clear from the start that ghosts and witches and the like were mere stories and nothing more, and that Halloween was just for fun. We'd decorate and put on costumes and trick-or-treat and have a good time. It seems silly to me to view a holiday that began with Christian practices (and is still celebrated in that way today) as totally evil and satanic, even if secular celebrations can tend toward that imagery at times.

And that blue check with his gotcha about the cross is, as is the habit of many fedora-tippers that don't bother to learn anything about the faith they denigrate, absolutely wrong. As the guy in the video says in the screencap, the cross is not a symbol of death, it's a symbol of Christ's sacrifice and resurrection, a triumph over death. The creeds of the faith don't stop at "Jesus died, the end," after all. (And quite the lovely display of humanity in that last reply, wishing for human sacrifice of those you don't like. Definitely claiming that moral high ground!)

My view lies in the middle of these two extremes. As long as you give your children a strong faith foundation, you won't need to worry about them being led astray by ghost stories and such. Same goes for adults, though I would certainly avoid fundamentalist talk like this. Go out and have fun, it's the one night a year where you get to dress up in a silly costume and not be viewed as a weirdo. Oh, and it's the only holiday standing in the way of the Christmas season advancing further through the year, so I have to celebrate it on principle.

As a side note, I would like to point out that it's not just fundies that can be sticks in the mud over Halloween. Remember all the lefties screeching over the years about cultural appropriation when someone dared to wear a sombrero, or the feminists bemoaning "sexy" costumes? Turns out that no one side has a complete monopoly on being wet blankets.

I think that's par for the course for the filthy Lutherans like me. Not going full Baptist-style sperg about OMG WITCHES AND GHOSTS BAD! but basically saying, "This stuff doesn't reals." Yeah, the problem with the people bob was replying to (and bob himself) is that they were equating the death of Jesus, with Undead/Ghosts as if it's the same thing. Which of course, it isn't. Especially since, spoiler alert, Jesus didn't stay dead. Yeah there's those wags out there that go "Happy Zombie Jesus Day" on Easter, forgetting that the concept of a "zombie" didn't exist 2000+ years ago in the Middle East. They don't understand that Jesus' death is celebrated not for its own sake, but for what it means and what it does. It's an entirely different concept than quasi-necromancy or whatever they think happens on Halloween. It's an old writer's trick: he's not writing about 300,000+ different topics. He writes about the same six or seven different topics, over and over again.

If you use the bird app regularly, you'll notice that it encourages this: pick your favorite topics, and marinate in a constant feed of those topics. If you remain on Twitter long enough, those six or seven topics will become your entire world. Bob may have had a glimmer of intelligence back in the day, but it has been thoroughly smothered by Twitter's diet of capeshit and lesbians.

On one hand, we have a much higher concentration of intelligent discussion here.
