Especially when a pillar of his election was a trillion dollars of public spending. He cares about the machine that actually makes america work. He really should just shut out the opposition the way Obama did, with the same words. "I won the election." The difference is that republicans are competent acting in opposition because their voters really only expect payouts that already exist as normal government operations. The democrats promise something different and have a tough time presenting a unified front for extended periods of time aside from their leadership in unbeatable districts.
It also makes it much less damaging to do a deal with the devil if the president actually works with the republicans. Perfect case study is Obama vs. Clinton. Obama gave the opposition the finger until he was desperate and it was already too late, Clinton managed almost all of his legacy after losing control of Congress. He maybe sleazy and have questionable motives, but he was pretty fantastic at getting things done after the wakeup call that was Newt Gingrich, who is the other side of the same coin.
