How will Bob react to seeing the Mario film?

It's better than that. He blusters aboeut "wounded democracy" but for the last two months he's been going on and on and on about how stupid the normies are and how the throngs of useless morlocks of middle America are destroying the SUPERIOR FUTURE of elites and experts ... which isn't exactly a ringing endorsement of the merits of democracy. I wonder if he's even remotely aware of the sheer inconsistencies he embodies.

He just wants to come across as sophisticated and has no idea what he really means most of the time.

Bob confirmed for Chinese sleeper agent.

I hear it's actually pretty decent. It even got a recommendation from National Review, who endorsed it as a genuine if occasionally cheesy look at American ingenuity at work. I think the only reason it might not make it too far in the Oscars is because while it's apparently pretty good it's kind of lightweight in terms of subject matter. "Smart women do math as their day job" isn't really all that riveting a premise no matter how under-appreciated those women were.

Of course, given how hard the Academy fell on its sword over that #OscarsSoWhite bullshit last year there is a good chance they'll force it into the running anyway.

Yeah, it's pretty good.

It's important to remember that just because Bob likes something doesn't mean its automatically bad. That's what HE does much of the time. I'm not interested in repeating the same cognitive faults as Bob fucking Chipman.

Like, Bob liking Mario doesn't make him a Lolcow. Mario is fine. What makes Bob a Lolcow is him sitting in his car after work, playing Mario (a game he has compared to 9/11 in terms of the scale on which it impacted his life) waiting for the rest of his family to go to sleep so he can go home and slip into his basement abode unnoticed.

If I've learned one thing over the years, whenever someone says they're teaching themselves a foreign language, they're almost invariably full of shit. Doubly so for Asian languages.

On the other hand, that person is someone who reviews video games for a living, its not like Mario didn't have a bigger effect on his life than 9/11.

That said, I think Bob's views of a "superior future" have as much to do with Plato's Republic (which he was probably forced to read in high school) as they do with Judge Dredd. Don't mistake this as a compliment however, Plato a shit. And of course even if Plato wasn't a spergy tryhard hanger-on of Socrates, the world's first troll, he certainly wasn't envisioning a gout-ridden unfuckable cry-baby as the philosopher king.

The thing is, Bob's isn't a game reviewer, and mentioning that he is will get him to ignore your argument quicker.

Despite that, he built his reputation on talking about video games in general, and his abject failure to keep up with the times only showed the world how inept he is at talking about a medium he likes to think he lords over and has the final say with (The Halo "Blue eyes" incident, Mass Effect 3, Confusing Dark Souls/Skyrim.)

But seriously, I can imagine Bob reading Plato's Republic and possibly Atlas Shrugged, even though he wouldn't dare admit it, and both works' overwritten, selfish messages resonating with the bullied, outcast Bob.

Actually, Bob once included Ayn Rand on a list of author's not-so-well-read gamers need to read. So he's pretty open about having read her.

Also, that list is a pretty paint by numbers "authors I had to read for high school and college" list. No one on that list was an emerging voice from like within the last 10 years.

Funny you should mention Plato's Republic, because Karl Popper blamed the ideas in that work for the rise of totalitarians like Hitler and Stalin, who's playbooks ol' Bobby Boy is apt to pull from.

Also, does anyone else find it odd that he admires a radical right-wing philosopher like Rand?

My suspicion, having neither read Atlas Shrugged OR watched that fucking video is that he picked her just to have some sort of libertarian in the list. The fact that that is the only name he could think of just goes to show he isn't well read. And of course the fact that I can't name a better one off the top of my head goes to show that I am not well read either.

I would say we should all find some emerging philosophical voices, but sane, rational ones are rare in modern academia.

To save you from having to listen to his grating voice and attrocius audio quality...
F. Scott Fitzgerald
George Orwell
Ray Bradbury
Charles Dickens
Mark Twain
Joseph Conrad
Ayn Rand
Howard Zinn
J.D. Salinger
David Mamet
Stephen King
William Shakespeare
Charles Bukowski
Oscar Wilde
Fyodor Dostoyevsky
H.P. Lovecraft
Ernst Hemingway
Richard Matheson
Jane Austen
Edgar Allen Poe
Anton Chekov
Robert Heinlein
Jack Kerouac
Tennessee Williams
Emily Dickinson
Raymond Chandler
Kurt Vonnegut
Marcel Proust
Leo Tolstoy
John Updike
Philip K. Dick
Sylvia Plath
Hunter S. Thompson

All the other authors on that list are commonly assigned as part of public school curriculum or college writing or literature course. The fact that the only hard right winger on his list is also the only hard right winger commonly assigned in that same context is pretty telling. No author on that list is an emerging voice from the last 10 years. I've long suspected that a lot of Bob's unearned superiority come from having been one of the smarter kids at school, a time in his life when he was being bullied daily and this just reinforces that suspicion. Congrats Bob! You're the kid who did all the required reading for class! We're all really impressed, I promise!

It's weird watching an adult man being brought low by issues most people would have shed within months of leaving high school.

You can elevate that past suspicion; Atlas Shrugged was complete shit. It's basically a libertarian bible; a giant impressive tome to hold up and cite, but never actually read.

Just like Bob did here!

Agreed the entire fanbase is a short bus of pseudo intellectuals who no one whose actually interested in philosophy takes seriously. I think Bob did read but only partially accepted it's naive notions of the intellectual superman. A leftwing randian if you will.
